I have a Droid X non rooted - running 588

I want to root & need help with instructions. So, if anyone can post step by step, easy to understand instructions I would greatly appreciate it.

I have downloaded z4 - did permanent root but it's not taking

If you had done the appropriate reading about Gingerbread, then you would know that z4root does not work on it.

.588 has a prerooted build, I suggest you go back to site you downloaded file and download the prerooted version..

I forgot GingerBreak worked on .588, I was thinking it was only for .4.5.591 and .595 but you are correct it should work... To many builds to keep up with

clicked the link, downloaded & put on my sd card. After I boot into recovery I can not find the download. I've put on the base of the sd & also put in download folder.

When the phone is connected to the computer I can see it there. When I disconnect I can not see it

Um... what the heck are you trying to do exactly?

...just install the app, make sure usb debugging is enabled and press the root button.

Read the developers instructions, that is a apk not a item to flash... You install it and run it like the instructions stated...
