My girlfriend purchased a indash cd/dvd/usb player with a touchscreen.

It doesn't have GPS like I thought. Can I install something or place a program that it can read to do so on a usb.

I don't believe it has Bluetooth because I can't find it in the menu and my phone can't find the reciever with bluetooth or wireless.

I have an Optimus V running Android 2.2.2. Can I connect it to the receiver. To play music through the car. Or is there a Front End type program that is Android Based.

I would like to use a usb drive for everything related to it. But can I boot Android os doing so and have the usb port on the receiver read it?

I am trying to do the same thing with a usb or Sd card for a tiny netbook as well. Both I want interactions with 1 or more of the 3 family phones we have. My family has questions and needs to adjust to the new android system and the phones. So I would like it if I could control them from one place.

As for the Netbook it is running Windows CE 6.0 Embedded and only has 128mb memory/hard drive space so I figured I could install Android on a flash card and install apps on the card or usb drive itself. otherwise Is their a way to install android on the 128mb of space and then install all apps/files such and such on an sd and work that way. Netbook would be turned on and off as well though so maybe just on the sd/usb card/drive.

Anybody know how to do any of this or know of a help thread for such or site to explain it.

android has to be compiled specifically for the device its going to run on.

youd need the software for the touchscreen, cpu, hardware buttons, all that stuff. it does just "happen" by installing android like you install Windows. its not like that at all.

this goes for putting android on the receiver and netbook. I dont any developer created a version of android for either of those devices.

it looks like you have one of those sylvania winCE netbooks. I was always interested in those but gave up when I found no reliable info for installing android. and the specs are less than most phones as well, it wouldnt run right either way.

Well I guess I have a project. To begin I am going to work on what I call "Android On A Stick" they have done this with mac and linux. Maybe I could use linux based programming and fuse it with android. Any ideas would be helpful.

Basic idea is to boot it in windows. Mac I cannot test as I don't have mac based pc or laptop. So first it has to use full screen. Usb booting. Keyboard and mouse then of course backgrounds of android. Then its just a matter of usable and convertable tweaked software. Might be tough but I love android and someone has to do it, right?

Then after that maybe I can try it out with bluetooth and wifi capable car receivers. I hear new ones are trying android because windows and android have now officially surpased iphone users. Seriously who has $300 or more for a phone.

Dad payed $50 each for phones with android. Payed less than $10 for 8gb sd card. So why spend more when android is an easy to use all in one computer. Basically my idea is reversing the process for android on windows.

I can use any help and ideas. When done I could use mac programmers for a mac version and will send the working programs codes to be converted for mac and since it will be possibly linux with android it may already work.

I'm babbling but this is what I am going to work on. As said all help and ideas would be helpful.

no idea what any of that meant.

but there is this.

Android-x86 - Porting Android to x86

its a project to port Android OS to x86 machines. like a laptop or desktop PC.

Its not really daily driver, and android is touch based so its not too usable either.

I dont know what you think you can accomplish but id like to see if you come up with anything.

Android is NOT like windows or linux or OSX. you cant "boot into it" like you can a linux live cd. it needs to be compiled specifically for the device its intended for. and youll need access to that devices flash memory and find out how to partition and where to flash android to after that. and good luck finding drivers for a device like that.

and yes, I had 300 bucks for a phone, and you know what it got me? a motorola Triumph which is worlds better than a little tiny optimus V. i love the OV but it does NOT compare to a "real" android phone. its a toy almost. functional for basic tasks and runs gingerbread nicely enough. if cheap android devices were good, you'd see more people with the cheap 99$ CVS android tablets.

u saying the ov is bad?

Sent from your mom's phone.

Lol. Right. I'm saying any smartphone expensive or not is great.

I admit it may be cheap. About 6## mhz processor. 200mb internal, 140mb usable if brand new no apps.

Battety bug sucks life to max 6 hours. Fixing this bug upon boot. Adding battery dr. And juice deffender make it last inbetween 24 to 48 hours for me.

I upgraded to 8gb under $10 for sd.

But overall $50 is great price getting three $50 each is awesome. Especially for a first android/ smartphone.

I'm basically saying overall anyone can afford it and its worth it.

As for $300 to $500. If you don't have family/roomates/dogs or others and have the cash to spend as much as half if not 3/4 amount of one months rent good for you.

But a lot more people can afford a $50 phone was my point

not bad for someone new to smartphones, like we all were/are at some point.

but there is a major difference between the OV and high end phones.

sure it costs more upfront, but you pay for a better quality experience in the long run. the OV is a phone that is cheap up front, but usually gets replaced quickly. A higher end phone lasts for a lot longer becuase the user doesnt feel so restricted in what it can do.

Took my $300 and bought an Asus EeePad Transformer. While my mighty OV plays hotspot. Have to say I feel my money was well spent. Plus the Transformer has lots of Devs.

The Moto Triumph is a "wanabe" high end device. With all the tabs under $300 now, I feel sorry for anyone that got duped into buying one.

I had a Galaxy Tab but it was pointless (for me and my use) to have a tablet and a phone. the phone did the duties of the tablet and was a phone, plus its a device I carry 24/7. makes sense to have a good one. a tablet (for me) stays at home unless im on a long trip. cant pull out a giant tablet where a phone is way more conveinent. especially in your use-case where the OV is still on you playing the internet for the tab. the way I see it, if a phone is going to be near me more than any other device, it should have as much functionality as possible in one device for reasonable price. the VM network is strong here, the price is right(monthly cost and intitial device cost), the phone works better than many phones I've owned (galaxy S, evo 4g shift) and thats just how it is.

you can like the tablet, others can like their Optimus V, I owned one since launch and loved it until I moved on. I never said my way was the one and only way to do things. haha. :P

True personal need does dictate usefulness. In my application I need a laptop like device I can comfortably input thousands of statistics with my full keyboard, connect my many instruments through the 2 full size USB ports for direct feeds. Compare, correlate, and compile the data to a useful format that is then streamed to my home system all while I am still in the field collecting the data or playing games. I can also take calls without interrupting the process. While colleagues of mine are carrying 3 to 4 different devices costing thousands of dollars to serve the same purpose as I sit with my 2 devices under $800 playing Order & Chaos HD online while my data compiles and is sent home.

I understand your needs are likely not work related and more about enjoyment and pleasure seeking.

my work doesnt require the same equipment, I only have to carry around my entire portfolio of designs and they fit on my phone and look good on its screen.

and I can totally see why you'd need that equipment as well.

Anyway this thread has gotten spamish.

To get back on track I put an android image on a 8gb usb card and it worked.

On windows xp, vista, 7 and others. May require different files for mac or linux.

Testing with xp laptop: success.
Desktop works better and mouse works. Keyboard works but language in arabic or japan. Either way I think I can change settings. It uses Android Keyboard - typing in english, sugestions in different language.

Still have to test car touch screen. Should work but may have to tweak some more for the sterio to boot.

For now I will post new thread on How to install and boot android using usb or flash drive. Even cds work.

Kudos to unbootin abd android porting 86x site. As I used both to create a working bootable usb. 8gb gives 500 mb internal space and 7.5gb external. With it I can even install an os onto a hard drive.

But as my question for this thread is un answered I'm still looking for ideas to use the new usb to making the car sterio boot from usb

answer that question, as I tried to earlier.

your car stereo is NOT a x86 based PC. it wont work.

if it somehow IS an x86 based PC, well, thats awesome, and goodluck.

Atm I can not access any files. I am staring to get it now.

She has a seperate gps but the only out put is a mini usb type port for the charger.

I have another question though.

I saw someone had been able to view android or use it on a gps with touchscrren ability. Can I do this as well or would it require bluetooth or other ports.

Also would the reciever be different with bluetooth. Maybe not an os but stream the phone and use it.

Otherwise there are tiny usb bluetooth cards on geeks.com for $10. Or a wifi type usb card. And sorry but also what about a wifi teher from the phone.

More questions...
Can I at least stream music, video and/or pics using usb/bluetooth if possible/wifi???
