Sooo my 2 year old just drowned my 3 day old S4.

I second and third and fourth what many said. If it makes you feel better, my 2 year old took my brand new ps3 controller in the bath with him the other day, and then dunked my key fob to my prius in the mop bucket today. I didn't find either of the two soon enough to save them. The ps3 controller was only 60, so not too big of a wallet breaker, but to replace the key fob is over $200. Luckily it will still work when placed in the ignition, just cant use it for keyless or unlocking/locking. It sounds like not too much damage was caused, I hope you can get it up and running again!

Hi will give you my experience with my G3, It was in the bottom of a bucket of water, Took battery out right away, did the rice also hair dryer on the baggy. 3 hours later fine. Dropped it without the case and damage the corner left part of the screen, Still working premo. A few days ago once again I thought for sure the phone was a goner..Nope still working. seems like it even works better.:)

I spill beer on devices fairly often. I do a battery-pull-as-fast-as-I-can!, and then use a hairdryer for a few hours. I've saved quite a few devices this way.

YOu should probably not use a hairdryer. One day, that may be the cause of the shorting out. Once the battery is pulled, you can let it sit in a bag of rice for as long as your patience allows, once all the water has evaporated or been absorbed, no extra circuits can be made and the phone should work.

If you know somewhere with a drying oven, take it there and bake it for a day. By bake, I mean at temperatures of 110degF, maximum. A problem is the coffee. Water alone is usually not too much of a problem for electronics. Purified water is used to wash printed circuit boards after parts are mounted. Impurities - and coffee would be considered and impurity :) - are the problem. The acids will damage the electronics, and if you sugared or creamed it there are other organics that may cause problems. So the chances are somewhat slim that you will recover the phone with a simple drying. But it's worth a shot. There are about a zillion small printed circuit board job houses here in the US, and almost all of them have small drying and epoxy curing ovens. Whether they will let you use them is another matter. Don't even think about kitchen ovens. Their temperature control is terrible and they will easily overshoot a set temperature to the point of destroying your phone. You could also put it in the sun, but that can get REALLY hot and may damage the phone by itself.

Rice is not as effective as silica gel, and you can find that stuff at McMaster-Carr here in the states for pretty cheap. A pack of 10 pouches to dehydrate 235 cubic inches each is about $6.

Otterbox needs to come out with waterproof cases for a lot more devices than just the iPhone. I would definitely get one. I don't let my kids play with my phone but little people like my son are quick ninjas in disguise lol and my 6 month old daughter is at the chewing on things stage. Definitely could use a waterproof case or even the S4 active to save my phone frm excessive drool lol

You know...I glanced at the title of this thread and nearly had a heartbreak! I saw "Sooo my 2 year old just drowned..." and thought Mother of God why would you be posting that here!?!! Then I saw that you were referring to your phone. As a parent I about died....lol.

I did the same thing!!!!

You might want to consider getting the Galaxy S4 Active....its the waterproof version of the S4, should be coming out next month I believe
False. Water resistant does not mean that it is water proof. Water resistant is good for humid areas and if you want to take your phone into the bathroom while you shower type scenarios but not dunks in cups/pools.

My phone is MY phone, not some toddlers. My kids don't even mess with my "pocket computer/communications device". (Of course they are all over 21 and have jobs...)

I would take it apart as far as you can and clean it with some electronics cleaner. You need to remove the coffee, sugar, creamer, ect...

I hope it works, but if not, you can replace it with what you really wanted in the first place, an HTC One. :).

It is waterPROOF (as stated in the specs), I'm not saying it will work 100% if you take is swimming in an ocean, but I bet it can still work after being underwater for a short period of time

Seidio makes a case called the OBEX. It is considered waterproof. I know they have it for the S3 but do not know about the S4. I am sure they will. For those with little ones, it might be worth the investment. It is not cheap but if it does what it says, it is worth it.

Well all I booted it up tonight and seems to be working fine. I tested everything and for now at least it's fine. If that changes at some point I'll use my insurance and get a new phone. Lol oh and Mr Willie, I didn't let him do anything. He accidentally knocked over my coffee cup which unfortunately was full and sitting next to my phone :-/.

Tough luck! A few months back a bloody huge torrential downpour wiped my HTC One XL from the face of the earth. I was trundling down a very nice road on my bicycle when all of the sudden it started to rain... and you can guess what happened next :) HTC WANTED TO CHARGE ME BLOODY $600 TO FIX THE PHONE. I said no and sold the phone as spares for $70. Now, I'm a proud owner of a new Sony XPERIA Z. I was contemplating between the SGS4 and HTC One as I am predominately HTC user and have owned two Samsung phones before (Samsung Jet and Galaxy Ace) but I recalled the problem that killed my old phone.. water. So the XPERIA Z popped into mind and I bought it immediately. Only qualms I have with the XZ is the sub par viewing angles. Other than that it's all systems go!

Well, glad it seemed to work out. I too, mistook the intro line as your son drowning. Well, perhaps lesson learned, keep the phone and the coffee on opposite sides, if coffee spills, it's hard for liquid to reach that far, and gives you a little more reaction time..

I get that, but it isn't just kids who knock over beverages onto phones. In celebrating my partners new (day old) S3 with martinis, she accidentally kicked over the martini (shaken not stirred 95% gin /5% vermouth) next to the G3! Her face was wet (the phone's face, not tears :-) but wiped it with no apparent damage. Didn't stop drinking martinis but now the S3 (and my S4) are placed "on higher ground".
