Not that this helps. But if my phone is upright (speaker faced down), if the ringer is not on high and your in the other room you aint gonna here it.
Just my 2 cents. If you feel there is an issue with the handset it should be under MFG warranty

Media Volume doesn't work?

I had an issue with getting the media volume to change using the volume buttons while I was playing a game. I could change the volume (using the buttons) only while the sound was playing (this game had no background music just some random sounds). When there were no sounds from the game, the buttons would only change the ringer volume.

Like Cedarizzo says, you need to have actual sound coming out of the speakers at the moment you press the volume buttons, otherwise they default to setting the ringtone volume.
