Sound Notification for Texts

Since the latest update about a month or so ago, I no longer get a sound notification after returning a text message. If I do no close the message app, it does not make a sound. If I put the phone down or the screen closes, there is no sound when the new text comes in, so I am not aware of the response. I do get a sound notification at the first text, but unless I back out, I do not get a sound on the response. Is there a way to fix this?
I might look at my phone 30 minutes later and see that there was an immediate response to my text, but since no sound, I never heard anything. Very frustrating. This was not the way it was before. Thank you.

HI there. Can you give us a little more information about your phone? Are you using stock SMS app or a third party one? Is it google messages?

It would just help us to identify your settings. Do you have notifications turned on for the app?

What version of Android are you using? Have you updated to Android 12? That has many different notification settings.

Thank you

Sorry, S10, Android 12, One UI4. I use the stock Messages app.
The problem is not that I do not get sound notifications. I get those, but if I do not back out of the text thread or close the app, I will not get any more sound notifications. Notification setting show, allow sound.
Before a month ago, I would get the sound for each text, now it has to be closed to get the sound. I hope that makes sense.
If I read a text and then turn off the screen, I will not get a sound notification.
Thank you.

Try and use google messages. I use it on my S10 plus. You can see if this works, plus you get RCS chat and other google enhancements.

I am happy with the regular app. I have had the phone for over 2 years and had no problems. Now with the switch from Sprint to T-Mobile (the 4G reception is really bad in very populated places in Los Angeles and other things) and then all the Samsung "upgrades" that make things worse, like having to close the text app after each reading, I like the phone less.
I am just trying to figure out why this changed.

It has always been like this for me. It assumes you are in conversation (screen on and message app open) so no sound notification needed. I understand you might want that option, but it would annoy me.

I am now thinking that it also does not do the pop up notification too, unless you close the app. So I keep finding old texts from the last person I was texting with when I get a new person's text. I see that there are texts from before on thread I had responded to. Hard to explain, but very basic, to me.

I don't have to close out of the text app to get notifications, but I don't get them while I'm actively texting with someone. You can leave the text app open and still get notifications, but you won't get notifications while texting or while you are sitting someone's text screen. That's been my experience.

That was my experience too until the recent update. That is what I am saying.
