Sound Search for Google Play suddenly a power-guzzling pig holding phone awake

The past two days, I've been experiencing abnormal battery usage with GSam reporting that it has held the phone awake 80% of the time since it's been unplugged. BBS shows the process *sync*_com.google.android.ears.heard.EarsContentProvider_Account being the top pig. Nothing has changed on my home screens and I haven't used any song identifying apps like Soundhound or Shazam, much less the Google app. There's no way to force quit it either; I just tried disabling it then re-enabling it.

Anyone see this? Searching doesn't point to anything specific. Thanks in advance.

Its not draining battery for me. thats for sure. its not even on my battery stat.
why not try a reboot?

The problem is that when it sucks your battery dry, it's a little late to reboot. That's the problem with run amok processes - you aren't aware they're causing a problem until they make their effects known. It's like why I stopped using Dolphin browser; I got sick of seeing my battery low, looking into what's drinking the juice, and finding that it was Dolphin hanging awake for hours after I'd last used it.

Identical circumstances here suddenly, and there still doesn't seem to be anything out there on this. I'd never even heard of the service. Did you ever figure out anything more?

Afraid not and I've since moved on the a Nexus 5 and OnePlus One. Good luck finding a fix. Have you tried searching XDA?

OK, thanks. I did look there, but like here, only saw one mention of it with no explanation. It's certainly rare. Or, at least, the use of BBS is, because without that you'd have no idea what's causing it.

If you don't use it anyway, I recommend just disabling it. Not an elegant solution, but if it doesn't run, it won't drain your battery.

This came with Gapps, which explains why I don't recall installing it. It's also only listed under 'All' in Settings/Apps (and sorted in the S section, not the G section like almost every other Google app), which explains why I'd never even seen it before. Even though it warned me that disabling system apps could have worldwide repercussions, I went ahead and did it anyway.
