Speaker holes and rattling buttons

First of all, I am not "looking for flaws" or "shaking my phone to hear something rattling". The phone shakes itself when vibrate is on.
And you can hear the buttons rattle over the vibration noise?

Regarding the speaker holes: In one day, I have missed several calls with the phone in my shirt pocket and the ringer on max. This is not acceptable.
As people have suggested, get a louder ringtone. But I am curious, since you just complained about the vibrate being so strong it rattles the buttons. Wouldn't setting your phone on vibrate and then placing it in your pocket be a much better solution for you not to miss calls?

I will look into alternate ringtones before making a decidision. Thanks for the suggestions.

I work in construction and I could never hear my phone ringers, no matter which phone I had. I keep the phone in my shirt pocket with vibrate on. Problem solved.

Yes, I can. I can mute the rattles by applying slight pressure to the buttons with my thumb and finger.

Why make things up? I never complained about the vibrate being so strong. I complained about the buttons being so loose that they rattle with a nornmal strength vibrate. And no, that is not a solution. I wear loose shirts and if I'm leaned over a machine or workbench, the phone is not in contact with my body. I can't feel the vibrate at all. Does that satisfy your curiosity?

Why are people so into bigger speaker holes??? Like having bigger speaker hole is going to turn the N5 speaker into HTC One. Lets be honest here the N5 has crappy speaker and having bigger speaker hole is not going to help it sound better

I just received my Nexus 5 yesterday and I'm real disappointed. Serial number 312KPGSxxxxxx, and it has the small speaker holes and both the power & volume buttons rattle. I compared it to my son's phone from from the release date first run, and the only difference I see is that my sim card door sits flush better than his. Our max volumes playing the same MP3 are the same. I thought they fixed these problems. Why are they shipping the phones with small holes and rattling buttons again? Should I expect a replacement to be better?
Sorry you're having issues with your phone. And I'm also sorry some people are not being helpful. WHAT is going on, guys? GEEZ. Others have given you some helpful points, so consider them. But if you're not happy with what you have, why not go on the Google Play website and chat with technical support? Let them know you're having some issues with the phone and that the phone rattles, and see what they suggest. I've heard that low sound is specific to this phone, so that may be unavoidable but the rattling is odd. Chances are, Google tech may recommend a replacement. It's a pain to replace phones (believe me, I know), but it's worth it to get a working phone that you'll own for a couple of years.

Good luck to you.

I see. So... Your phone is in your chest pocket while you work rather than your pant pocket?

First of all, I am not "looking for flaws" or "shaking my phone to hear something rattling". The phone shakes itself when vibrate is on. I guess it's selfish of me to want to use the vibrate feature. Regarding the speaker holes: In one day, I have missed several calls with the phone in my shirt pocket and the ringer on max. This is not acceptable. I work in a machine shop and ambient noise is out of my control. I never had a single problem hearing my Galaxy S2 ringer. This is what brought me to this forum. Thanks for all the valuable advice such as "stop complaining", "enjoy the phone, it's perfectly usable". It may be perfectly usable for you. You must work in a quiet environment.
I guess my big question is: Is there actually a fix for the low volume issue? I can live with the rattling buttons, but I can't continue to miss calls. If Google has effectively addresed this issue, I will RMA it. If not, I will return it and shop for a different phone.

If you missed calls at full volume with the phone in your front shirt pocket, do you think the speakers holes will make a difference? You might want to RMA it and get a Moto X. The Moto X vibration is to strong that if you cannot feel it, you might have nerve damage...as for the power button I think it is the design. I do not think the button is attached to anything inside and is held in place by the frame and just presses another areas when pressed. Just my thought though. Some frames might be holding it tighter. I always use TPU case so my buttons are covered so I would not have known about the power button until I read about it.

Exactly. It wouldn't survive 1 day in my pants. I'm constantly leaning over machinery and benches.

No, I don't. That is why I am here asking. The web is full of conflicting info and I was looking for feedback from people who had theirs replaced with the hopes of getting a louder one.

Obviously, there is no official fix for the volume issue. The rattling buttons I can live with, but was hoping I would get one with tight buttons as all the sites I checked out, including this forum mentioned that these issues were addressed and fixed in the current batches. I have found some very loud ringtones to try. We'll see how it goes tomorrow...

Thanks.

Good luck. Have you tried listening to a song at full volume? It gets so loud it hurts my ears.

The low volume won't really change in any determinable way with another phone. I would suggest that you purchase a soft gel case or bumper and the snug fit will look after any rattle issues you might be experiencing.

There is discussion about re: later series run numbers meaning upgraded phones but I have read numerous reports from users of series 310.XXX, 311.XX and 312.XXX all sharing a variation of similar complaints. IMO not worth the effort to change.

Good luck with the device.

I had issue with the loudness of the stock ringtones even before the 4.2.2 update improved the speaker that was fixed with 3rd party App's loud ringtons. After missing a few phone calls I picking a few ringtones from Zedge it is even louder than my old apple i4. They even had louder Apps. Go to the App store and search for "loud ringtones" and you will find out there is nothing wrong with the N5's speaker not being loud enough.

Louder ringtones seem to really help and I have decided to keep the phone. There no disputing that it's an amazing piece of gear and at this price point, there is absolutely nothing that comes remotely close in comparison. Thanks for all the advice!
