I have looked for this too. As far as I know there is no speed dial.

Widgets. Contact to desired home screen.

I actually installed "Dialer One" that allowed me to set speed dials.

Yup place your starred contacts etc on the desktop and stack them in a folder. Works great.

You could also try "contacts widget" from mkt. Brings picture and direct dial. Each 1x1 space is a contact. Each one is created individually so you can have as few or many as you want.
