Spontaneously Launched Apps - WTF?

OK, I'm new to Android, but something is really pissing me off.

I periodically check my Advanced Task Killer Free app to see what's running (to kill unneeded apps) so I can conserve battery life (battery is deserving of a separate thread - which I'll do shortly).

I sh!t you not when I say that the last time I checked ATK, literally SEVEN apps had launched themselves in the interim of time since the last time I checked... about 10 minutes ago. Here's what spontaneously started running:

  1. Facebook
  2. Maps
  3. Google Voice
  4. Handcent SMS
  5. Clock
  6. iSyncr
  7. Music

NONE of these were running 10 minutes ago, nor had I launched any of them.

Can someone tell me what is going on and how to stop it? :'(

First uninstall ATK. it will drain more battery than any of those open apps. And cause more problems. Android works differently than other systems...android has apps.that share files so you will see them open but the are not necessarly running . Trying to close them is counter productive as it forces the system to have to reopen them.

On a side note the cursing is not needed to ask a question

First off, I apologize for the language. It's not my intention to be rude or offend anyone. My bad, won't do it again.

And... thanks for the tip! I will uninstall ATK now.

Is there anything else I can do prolong battery life -- like turn off WiFi when I'm nowhere near a signal, or turn off GPS when I think it's not needed at the moment? My two complete battery rundowns have taken 8 hours and 10 hours, with light to medium use. Seems kinda low to me.

That its great compared to TB 4-6.. Most drain comes from the radio scanning for data or cell towers pulls alot....you could shut off background data. This is what updates widgets and/or pushes mail...etc

Settings>accounts & sync> background data....uncheck it

So turning off (unchecking) background data would mean absolutely no Gmail push? I'd have to manually check for any new email? Or it would just do it less often?

Yeah you would have to check it manually.....hey how much longer will you be on.. And are you willing to help me make an odin package from your phone?

I'm in Hawaii. It's early, sorta. I can help but have no idea what you are talking about. Just PM'd you.

reef, are you running one of those Live wallpapers? That certainly will add to battery drain as well.

Yeah Live wallpapers will hurt the battery a bit. Turning Sync off helps, but you wont get notifications unless you manually check. I tried to go to the wifi advanced settings since I have that on a lot. And it has an option for it to sleep as soon as the screens turned off. Then it comes back when you turn the screen back on. Im still trying to figure out if thats what it actually does or not cause Ill turn on the screen, and the wifi is already on there.

unless you are experiencing horrid lag dont ever worry about what is running and never use a task killer! they suck!

Not anymore!

Update - uninstalling ATK (what a counterproductive app!) and getting rid of the Live wallpaper :( seemed to do the trick. MUCH better battery life today. About 12 hours!!

Well, I have had these cases of spontaneously launching apps happen a few times with Google Music. Although I have not opened it, sometimes when I start Orb Live, Google Music also starts by itself. I then have two tracks playing simultaneously -- not a pretty sound most of the time. :)
