Sporadic battery indicator on Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch

Everything worked fine for the first 8 months I had this phone, but in the past week my battery indicator has been completely off. It claims my phone is charging twice as fast now, it will drop dramatically with no use, and will sometimes just stay constant for three hours. So overall it's just not correctly reading battery use anymore. I haven't had the ICS update pushed to me yet, and my phone is not rooted (nor do I really want to root unless that's my only option). I have been using my GPS a bit more heavily this week than normal, but I still have these issues when it's turned off. Any suggestions as to how I can fix this?

I have had similar issues after now 10 months. I replaced the battery and all is well again. I limped around with the weak battery for a couple weeks and when I finally replaced it I noticed a bulge in it. I'm glad it didn't burst!
