Well if things cant get any worse, rumors are floating around that sprint and verizon are gonna start chargeing for data packs ..and said u can kiss good bye unlimited data..hope this ant true!

It was just a matter of time! Data use is skyrocketing and bandwidth isn't keeping up -- follow that trend line and something has to give. So, either there is some form of cap or there is a tiered structure or they go fully metered.

Math is a *****, but it doesn't lie!

They floated the idea last year.
technically there is a 5gb cap in the fine print of unlimited contracts.
I don't mind, because if you use less you will pay less.

If they take it away, I'm not paying the $10 extra a month anymore.

i think you are assuming you will have an option ;)

It would be logical they would drop that charge, but its kinda what they say goes type deal.
I doubt they can change though if you are in contract. ATT grandfathered it as long as you didnt change your plan. Once you changed it you were sol and couldnt go back

I saw this for Verizon, but not Sprint bit.ly/ 9lkhDU Verizon to Change Mobile-Data Plans (can't post links yet, sorry for the workaround)

You can thank all the people who want to use up 60-80gbs of data. It makes me sick. Hell i even downloaded a few music selections, downloaded some episodes of the new futurama, and even some psx games to play. But i only used about 7.5gb of data this month. Also that's including streaming movies to my Netflix box and playing online with my ps3. I pay for the $30 hotspot feature so my 7.5gb i fair. But to the others who rooted there phones for free hotspot, then use 7-8 times more gigs hen i do need to have there sprint account watched very closely. Let sprint charge them for abusing data. That's my opinion.

I agree, charge the abusers and not the average individual.

I have yet to get over 2 G on my acct but as i use the phone more i am sure that will increase. 7-8Gb is understandable but 70-80 is outrageous.

Sprint has been going crazy with the $69.99 plan. I doubt they are putting a cap on it. Verizon..... not sure.

Well I figure Thats why I pay a extra 10 a month with my evo.

I'm not worried here.

I really don't know how much data im using as in terms of GB but its not that much.

OK, let's game this out...

1. Verizon and ATT go with caps and tiered plans.

2. All the heavy data users switch from them to Sprint.

3. Sprints network, now burdened with lots of heavy users, grinds to a halt.

4. Sprint has a decision to make: keep the unlimited plans and go out of business OR follow the others lead and put in caps and tiered plans.

After a few years with tiered plans we'll see all the carriers, including Sprint, move to fully metered billing just like the electric companies.

Worried now?

At first, I was kinda concerned by this. But then I realize, my online usage with a smartphone would probably just be checking email, weather, and a few websites along with downloads from the Android Marketplace.
So lets say Verizon's highest data plan option is 5Gb. That actually gives you a lot to do.

Right now, we have Verizon's wireless keycard for our internet with a cap at 5 Gbs a month.
I mention to stretch that 5 Gb out pretty far. And I am a heavy internet user, downloading Development applications and visiting a few websites daily.
So basically, you can go far with a 5 - 10 Gb cap.

Why would anyone need 20 Gb of free transfer anyways from a smartphone?
The only way I can see someone going over 10 is with tethering and even then, you almost have to be using the internet all day for a month or download a huge program. (Photoshop, 3DSM)

First post here.... but hey this is a quality post...

This may sound conspiracy but I feel the reasoning behind the tiered data plans has nothing actually to do with bandwidth, but more so of a "Well we invested 10 billion dollars into the 3g / 4g USB sticks and we are stuck in a contract with the distributors for the next X years and well if we allow the smart phones to have unlimited data AND tethering.... what is the purpose of having a USB stick???"

That actually makes a lot of sense. See, we have a Verizon USB stick. $60 a month for 5 Gb. With a smartphone, it would only be an additional $20 on top of the $29.99 data pack. But, then we would be limited to only 2 Gb with tethering.

So while the $29.99 gets you unlimited through the phone itself, tethering to your laptop limits you to 2 Gb. And yes, they will know, lol.
