Sprint/Boost two-click root with custom kernel

There is another thread in this forum that provides details on how to install clock-work-mod recovery through ODIN. Follow those directions. Then you can backup, and then follow my two part above for a better kernel and root access. I have never heard of anyone being canceled for rooting, however once you root, I would not take your phone into a boost store. I've been rooted (sprint) for over a year with no issues.

Okay, so a search on "clock-work-mod recovery Odin" brings up many threads of people with problems. (I don't want to hear other people's problems, at least until I know what I'm doing anyway  ) Have yet to find actual instructions.

Someone mentioned xda developers but I don't know if that is here within Androidcentral or on another website. Found the website, which took me to the clockworkmod ROM Manager Recovery site ***

Ya, am kinda not a superuser at this point, but reflashed a pandigital novel awhile ago and thought this shouldn't be much harder.

Hate to be that annoying clueless guy, but I guess that's what I am.

And of course, another question comes up, do I need wifi access to complete this process? I've downloaded your zips to my computer already.

I've been using Klink Blue Tethering app through this phone to get internet on my netbook, but don't have wifi or other internet @ home.I

*** Am I on the right track? (I found the RomManager.apk, but I saw a few posts saying to not use Rom Manager, it will brick your phone. This is like studying for an exam - another post)
(I'll keep updating this post if I have more questions, which it seems like I will, I don't want to lengthen your thread too long)

I think I found the right androidcentral thread from XDA!

V Thanks 34, that might be it.

i followed the steps for the phoenix rom 0.2 and when i try to install initially it gives me a warning screen asking if i want to install the new OS. I proceed, but it will not install the odin, it gets stuck on the downloading screen.

I understand 0.2 doesnt work for boost phones, i just want the CWM, am i trying to install the wrong thing?

Also when i proceed ahead and try to install your update.zip file from the recovery screen (android system recovery) it tells me
E: signature verification failed
installation aborted.

is this because i dont have cwm properly installed?

phillupz - if ur still having problems simply install cwm (directions are in my last post) and then try flashing the update.zip again. i think u were try to install pheonix rom instead of cwm and thant you tried to flash the update.zip while still on stock recovery.. this should fix ur issues

doowkram - first of all, DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER because it will mess up ur phone if u do and as for the recovery just follow the instructions i give in my thread here http://forums.androidcentral.com/sa...how-installing-cwm-5-0-2-7-a.html#post2059302

:D:D:D Thank you so much :D:D:D

I don't know why, because I DO know how to use the search box, but for some reason, instructions are really hard to find on this website. I've done hours of poking around. I am thankful for the people that create these threads, because at this point I would not be even trying to attempt this.

Anyway, Just wanted to say thanks to Deke, but especially To all of you.

dmrlook can you help me with my problem??

Do you have the latest zip file from this thread. when I first released, we had this issue where system was not mounting read/write. I had a spelling error in my batch script. If you have the most recent, then I would cut and paste the individual commands and see what they do.

Also when i proceed ahead and try to install your update.zip file from the recovery screen (android system recovery) it tells me
E: signature verification failed
installation aborted.

is this because i dont have cwm properly installed?

So, I finally plucked up the courage to install the CWM, everything seems good.

I proceeded to try dmrlook's update.zip, and I get the same error as the quote above.
E: signature verification failed
Installation Aborted

I tried reinstalling the CWM, just in case, but that did not help. I wonder if I'm missing a step in there. I check "one package" and leave everything else checked. When the screen goes black I hold down "u". Reboot is highlighted and Odin seems to be waiting for a reboot, so I reboot. It comes back up to my normal screen, and Odin finishes its timer, but doesn't seem to be doing anything else really. Then after 5 minutes it ends its process with:
<1> PASS!!!
<0> Destroy instant..
<0> Killed timer

When I hold down the "u" key after the install, a shorter list comes up in CWM and I select
the update.zip from sdcard. And receive the above error.

So, deke, dmrlook, phillupz - who's had success?

I'm not ready to wipe the partition, so I Guess I best go back to learning the Android system with the SDK :)

I just figured that out. Kernal installed. Wish me luck on step 2

update:
The Finish_root sequence ended with the results in the jpg file I've attached. Basically, it couldn't find most of the necessary files, Superuser, busybox, etc.

Before I got those results, it asked me to turn on Debugging, which was already on, which I checked then hit any key as instructed.

Next up the bat file asked me to unlock my phone. I thought maybe it meant enter my screen lock password on my phone as it had locked. This was not the case so I hit spacebar and then the bat went to work, with the results shown in the windows.bat.results.jpg attached here.

I tried something I should not have. Clockwork is installed still, and I get the flash screen from dmrlook (it's pretty cool!). So I went to clockwork and looked for some way to fix. I went to Advanced, then saw "Fix Permissions". I tried that. I know better, and I still did it. I powered down my phone in the middle as I realized that probably wasn't what I wanted to do.

Also, to make matters worse, I did not make a backup. How stupid can a guy be?

The phone now will startup, I see the cool flash screen from dmrlook, the screen goes black, then tries to load up. It seems to be connected to the Boost network, the 3G image and the phone status bars show up. Then, error "application launcher stopped unexpectedly" comes up, with option to Force Close, or Report. I hit Force Close and the same thing comes up multiple times.

That's as far as I can get. I don't know how to fix this.

This is my only phone, so I'm a little screwed at the moment and I kinda deserve it. However, I desperately need help.

Help? I understand if you would leave me out in the cold. Can't afford a new phone at this time.

signed,
Stupid Noob (Mark)

It also told me my phone was still a read-only system.

I see elsewhere that a Factory Reset is needed to get the Launcher to start again, but considering I've installed your update, can this be done with success, or do I need the original files from Samsung/Boost?

I don't want to completely brick my phone, so I'll wait for a response, and I've got my contacts in google, so I'm not too worried about this, as I can get them back easily. My apps are all in Google Play.

I really need my phone working again. Please help.

Okay, so I ran Fix Permissions in CWM and my phone is usable again. Dolphin is having force close issues, and I have to reset some things, so I may have to uninstall things, and start over a bit, but all is not lost. Sorry for the desperate messages.

Okay, so still not rooted.

About Phone info still shows the old kernal, tho I'm not sure if that was supposed to change. I do have the awesome new splash screen, and the phone seems to boot up quicker, but Finish_Root definitely does not finish root now. Probably my fault, but not sure.

I tried re-flashing the update file and then the windows.bat file for finish root. It looked the same as the jpg above.

I installed CPU Cruise Control, and it asks me if I'm using a rooted phone, and tells me that Cruise Control does not have su permissions.

Also, my physical Home key no longer works.

I get the same thing as tattopaul. all the files fail and i dont understand why?? can you help me dmrlook!!!!

You should do a factory reset and reinstall your apps. As for rooting, try doing the steps in the batch file manually and let me know what step fails. Also, I am on vacation at the moment so I'll be slow to reply.

so i did all the steps noted in both post. i have the splash that worked. i did the second step but busybox was not installed. when i opened up root explorer it has the rw there where i am able to delete anything if i wanted to. im guessing im rooted but i wonder if i rebooted would the root go away or is it permanent.
