Hi,

I have a Sprint G3 that was flashed (prior to 2013) to Boost. Want to know if there are any custom roms out there that I can use?
Thanks.

As far as I know, you can use the Sprint ROMS.

But I'd be sure to make a nandroid backup of your current setup before flashing a new ROM, just in case.

Re: Sprint G3 custom roms

Thanks for the responses. I actually did do a nandroid backup recently. Are there any Sprint custom roms you can suggest? I know zilch about the process so I will have to do some research but if you can point me in the right direction that would be great.

Appreciate the help!

Re: Sprint G3 custom roms

Thank you for the suggestions. I read about MOAR on several threads and in other forums but I wasn't sure it would work for my situation. Good to know I can use Sprint S3 custom roms. This will be the first time I am flashing a custom rom myself - the person I got the phone from was sending me the files previously so I'm a little nervous that I will somehow screw-up my phone. I have the nandroid and titanium back-ups so I think I should be ok. I think I saw on some forum a guide to flashing custom roms so will be sure to look through that before I make the attempt. I do have a few newbie type questions was hoping you could answer and I apologize in advance because I'm sure they are pretty basic:

- do I need to install gapps separately with any of these roms? Would that be spelled out where I download the file from?
- I read in the thread about MD1 and MD4 - what exactly is that and how do I check to see what I have?
- does the rom you use include hotspot? : )

Thanks again. If I run into any errors installing, can I post back here or should I post in the thread that you forwarded?

Re: Sprint G3 custom roms

As far as gapps, no, they are included in these ROMs. It will be spelled out if it isn't included.

To check the baseband go to settings, then about device, there it should be under baseband. If it ends in MD4 then your on the most current version. If it ends in MB1 then it is 1 off.

Yes the ROM I use has a hacked hotspot included.

Re: Sprint G3 custom roms

Hmmn, my baseband version does not have either at the end of it. It is L710VPLG8. Is that bad? I also had one other question - I was reading in other forums about problems with 3g after installing some custom roms. I don't see any mention of that here but just wanted to double-check. Hopefully I am still good to go considering my baseband version .....

Re: Sprint G3 custom roms

I guess I'm not surprised the modem is different on different carriers. I honestly don't remember if flashing the ROM will also change the modem (I'm sure someone else will chime in), but if you can find the LG8 modem file you could flash it separately after flashing the ROM, if necessary.

I use MOAR, by the way, and am very happy with it. Excellent performance, and tons of customizations available.

Re: Sprint G3 custom roms

I kept getting OTA update message and as previously mentioned, the person that rooted and flashed my Sprint S3 to Boost sent me updates that he put together and the OTA message would go away. I remember he would tell me not much was new in what he was sending me so maybe that is why I still have LG8? Someone from another forum suggested disabling OTA updates and after searching I came up with this fix - placing FOTAKill apk in the system/app folder. Thankfully the annoying OTA went away. Is LG8 considered outdated or just a preference for a user? I guess the main question is can I still flash a custom rom with baseband being LG8? I did read somewhere that the baseband, and I think another term for it is radio affects 3g connection which quite honestly has not been as good as I would like. So maybe something different would be better?

Hope I'm making sense and asking my questions correctly.

Thanks.

The modem & ROM are independent of each other. And it isn't usually included in ROMs.

Re: Sprint G3 custom roms

Ok so it sounds like I can flash custom rom with LG8 modem/radio that I currently have and it could possibly change it once I do that or I can change it back to LG8 after I flash the custom rom should I choose to do so. Do you know if there is a list somewhere in a forum of what modem/radio works with what custom rom? Or does it go by what model phone you have instead? If a different one can help improve my 3g I would definitely like to try it. I'll try google but figured I would ask someone that knows this stuff better.

Re: Sprint G3 custom roms

I did find some additional info online about installing modems so I think I'm good. One other thing I wanted to ask you about regarding the Wicked Sensation rom you use - were there any issues with your 3g or mms after installing? You didn't mention anything about it so I'm guessing not but there are many threads out there where users are saying there were problems with one or the other after installing custom roms. (which custom roms they installed were not included though) I did see a fix for the mms issue but was hoping to avoid having to do if it could be avoided.

I have never had problems with data or mms. But also I never used a sprint phone on boost or any other service either other than sprint.

Ah, that could be what causes the issue(s). Well for now I'm going to try a different modem to see if that helps with my slower than necessary 3g speeds. Glad I found out about that and hopefully one day soon I can flash a custom rom. Will keep the ones mentioned here on my list!

Thanks again for all your comments and suggestions. I definitely learned a lot!

If you haven't already, go to Settings / Update and update PRL and Profile. That might help with your 3G speeds.

Some other terminology I'm not familiar with. What are prl and profile and it is ok for me to do even though I'm on Boost?

Much appreciated!

Both of these are found under settings, in system update. I would guess that it would be ok, but not 100% sure since it was flashed to boost.

I'm about 99% sure that updating PRL and Profile will go out to Boost's servers for the update information. Since I've never been on boost, though, I can't say I'm 100% positive.

Hi,

I hope to flash this rom this weekend. Had to take care of an urgent computer issue I was having. : (

I did think of a couple more questions to ask before I do this - Does it matter what recovery I use? Don't think that was mentioned but maybe I missed it. I have TWRP. Also, if my phone is flashed to Boost, do I do a factory reset besides wiping cache and delvik? I see that is the preferred way to do it but I'm wondering if it could wipe out being flashed to Boost.

UPDATE: Just reread the description of Wicked Sensation and I see it does mention best to use TWRP so I am set there. Do I flash the Kernal file after I do the rom?

Thanks.
