Wtf sprint is raising insurance to $11 and the deductible to 150-200?? This is crazy and this was a leak. When did Sprint plan on springing this one on us. I bet they were going to tell us 14 days after the nexus comes out so we can't return out phones. Then they would have us in a corner. Either pay the extra money or be without insurance. And the deductible is just crazy...

wouldn't it be the same if you didn't get a new phone? the insurance will raise regardless you have a new phone or not? how are you stuck w/ a new phone if they annouce it 14 days after you got the nexus? wouldn't you still stuck on your old phone? unless you are thinking about changing carrier because of this. Sorry, I am not trying to sound like an ass, just don't understand what you mean?

lol Wut?

He's saying that because of the nature of the news, it being a leak, one would imply that Sprint plans on surprising it's customers with the news. He's also saying that given the fact the sprints return policy is 14 days, you're out of luck if they announce it 14 days after your bought your phone. After those 14 days you're left with the phone (you cannot return it for a full refund) with either no insurance, or expensive insurance/deductible.

I understand that, but wouldn't your insurance on your current phone be raised too? unless they grandfather you in at the old price if you aren't changing your phone. i personally don't see the point of getting insurance. monthly fee and detuctible is about the same as buying an used phone online.

No. This is for LTE devices only.

I would think that they'll grandfather you in. But as soon as you remove or add another LTE Device to your line and add the TEP, then you're gonna have to pay the new fee. That is unless, they make this sudden change tonight at midnight so that it can affect all of us new Galaxy Nexus Owners.

Oops, i missed that part, guess that's kinda important. well, I still see insurance the same way. not worth it.

Let's see now. 2 years x $11/month = $264
That's more than the phone cost once you have the upgrade discount again.
Add on a $150 deductible and now you're at $314 for total replacement cost.
It may be worth the risk of one lost/broken phone during those two years.
If they do this, I may just drop the insurance.
In ten years now I have used it only once, and I felt ripped off then. Now it looks like they're getting rid of any subtlety about it.

THIS. Exactly my thinking. You have one year of coverage through the manufacturer on most hardware issues OR you can buy one on ebay/craigslist for less later in the life-cycle. I hate betting on failure- betting my phone is going to be lost, stolen or destroyed and paying $260 for that bet.

Generally you can order parts and fix your own phone, get a new one, or find a cheaper temporary replacement. Warranties are free money for most companies.

Right now, I'm about to sell my HTC EVO 3D to some guy on Ebay who probably lost his phone. He is going to pay like $100 and have a pretty slick device.

this is exactly how I feel. only 150 for evo 3d? that's too cheap man. haha

I've had TEP ever since I switch to sprint. I used it for my Evo, my NS4G and Optimus.

I'll rather pay $150 for a lost or broken phone than $550 + tax. Not saying that I'll lose the phone, but in my profession.. You never know. Plus with flashing ROMs and all that, you don't know what may go wrong.

All in all, it's just a piece of mind. It's better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it.

Exactly

right before I got my EVO4G, I sent my BBTOUR 9630 into sprint for a problem/defect and they sent me a brand new one. About a week later I went in and bought my evo4g. I didn't resell my BBtour, just kept it around as a backup because i never buy insurance.

sure enough, my evo is still going 22 months later (never lost/cracked glass/dropped in water/etc)

glad to have not paid for insurance over the last 4 years.

I will be keeping my evo4g as a backup, and buy an EVO4GLTE (no insurance)

I will do the math, I believe Square trade will offer much cheaper insurance than Sprint itself.

Funny you mention this.... I just posted about a new offer for Wells Fargo credit card holders.

I recently saw a flier in my statement envelope offering cell phone protection if you pay your monthly bill using automatic bill pay (through your carrier). They'll reimburse you $600 after a $25 deductible, but it doesn't cover lost items:

https://www.wellsfargo.com/jump/credit_card/cellular_phone_protection.jhtml?kw=cell phone

I currently have insurance through Verizon, but I'm thinking about dropping it and solely relying on Wells Fargo. Thoughts?

If this is true, there's even LESS reason to ever buy insurance. Bought insurance on my first phone, never used it, haven't bought it again since on any phone I've owned, even my wife's new iphone doesn't have it. It's a waste of money.

A big piece or a little piece?
