But I have an unlimited plan - is it possible to get unlimited on Verizon without being grandfathered in?

I've seen the plans for sale on eBay, but it requires your phone number to change to the plan sellers I believe. Check it out. As far as I Know that's the only way.

You will have to start out with the sellers number, but you can change it right after you assume liability of the unlimited data line

Sorry for going off topic but are you getting a lot of disconnects lately? My friend is telling me he has full signal and drops calls every time and Sprint claims no issues.

I was having issues with sprint such as drop calls and decrease in data. I am in a great area. I got fed up and ended up leaving Sprint for T-Mobile

Is it area specific? It could be on an overloaded tower.

Well last year I was in the same boat. Was thinking of going to att.

Now 4g is popping up everywhere (rural area north of Detroit) and I have awesome call quality

Wow, that's bad. Maybe a problem with the phone?

When I had signal issues with my Thunderbolt, Verizon Sent me a few warranty replacements. In the end, they sent me a Rezound, which finally fixed the signal issues.

Both him and his friend are suffering from the issue so its not phone related. Both are about to switch to Verizon because of this. They used to get great service but lately not so.

They are probably working on the towers in the area.. When they start doing this you go through hell of dropped calls, even more horrid data, and signal issues.

Correct, the upgrade process takes 4-6 weeks per tower. During this time they manually install and adjust the new panels with hand tools. Throughout the process they turn the tower on and off to test it. And even when its on they can restrict access to the tower to on site personnel only.

Op you have to understand that sprint is in the process of manually upgrading every one of their towers. It wasn't like att or versions 4g rollout, where they just upgraded the lesser hardware/software on site. Sprint is actually doing a complete overhaul of everyone of their towers, and when its complete they will be using more advanced technology then both att and Verizon.

Verizon won't be any better, they actually just started a similar process to prepare for volte rollout. They have to manually upgrade every one of their towers as well, as they took the lazy way out in deploying 4g. It allowed them to deploy far faster but they suffered in the long run.

Thats what I told him but he has called Sprint multiple times and they said all things are functioning normally. He asked about maintenance and such and they said not in his area.

Makes no sense.
