So I had my sprint service shut off because I'm in a tough spot right now. Don't feel like selling my EVO though, so I'm asking you guys what is there to do with an EVO with no service.

My old Evo is my utility device....mp3, media, wifi internet tablet, camera etc. The question is, what do I do with my old camera, mp3 player etc, LOL!

you can also flash it over to Metro or T-mobile, just saying because they have data plans that are cheaper then Sprint. sure you get throttled after 2Gigs but so what, 40 bucks or 80, you decide. I also have an old EVO that a friend dropped on me after he got shut down and that's exactly what I do as well; use it basically as an ipod touch.

Can't be flashed to T-Mobile different technology on that network don't know about metro.

Well here's another question. I'm ask to do an update all the time, but when I say ok, I get an error. Is this because I'm rooted?

You cant do the update if your rooted. DONT do the update if your rooted. OR have a custom ROM.
Most of the time you loose ROOT and risk bricking it.

also from you home pc get a list of local free wifi- McDonald's- star bucks-

my cable company (Internet at home) also has many free hot spot in my town.

Good luck I hope thing get better for you.

Thanks, but I have one more question. How exactly do I use this google voice, and is it going to cost me money? I have it set up, I think.

Google voice is free to make calls to anyone within the continental United States. It costs to make international calls but it's free otherwise. You can also send and receive text messages through Google Voice.

Within your settings, you can even tell Google Voice to be your default call app, so then you can almost use your phone like normal, assuming you're in an area with wifi. :)
