Longtime iPhone user got bored. Been having a heck of time getting adjusted to Android but seems cool so far. Some newbie questions.

HTC One w/ Trickdroid and Nova launcher.

1. Is there a way to turn the LED light behind the speaker off completely? I've unchecked everything but it still blinks for notifications I believe. Including when the screen is off which is distracting at night.

2. Is there a way to have the notifications come up on the screen when it's off? Like the iPhone lockscreen notifications. I leave my phone on the desk and it alerts me incoming emails sometimes. Again, I checked everything in the security menu I thought would take care of it but nothing... both Gmail App and stock Mail. I turned on all the notifications there too.

3. I am using an aftermarket headphones but the volume buttons don't work. Are they supposed to be able to adjust the volume?

4. How do you get the text expander to work? I added some custom terms into the Personal Dictionary with some keys but in iOS, when you typed those keys, the longer word would come up. Sometimes here the options come up but I want to force them to appear.

5. Push mail for Gmail? They shut down Activesync right? So Gmail App is the only option?

Thanks all. This forum has been a world of help. I've been on this phone for over 20 hours and finally think I got it to a good place!

Hey!

I'm in the same boat. Used the iPhone since 2007 and just got the HTC One last week. I can't really help you too much with these but I would like to know about number 2 as well. I really liked being able to see the notifications at the lock screen with the iPhone.

One thing i did do was download swiftkey. I read on here that it is the best keyboard for android, and I really love it! Check it out if you like!

Glad to find a fellow ex-iPhone buddy!

I'll answer #1 and #2 together: you may have a setting inside your Messaging app to turn your screen on for incoming SMS/MMS messages. Open up the app and check the settings. However, the Notification light also serves the purpose of telling you that you have notifications, so it may just be a part of transitioning to watch for the light instead of the whole screen to pop on.

If they were originally designed for an Apple product, they probably won't work with the One or any other Android device. You'll need to find a set that is compatible with Android. Apple uses a different system (hardware-wise) to communicate with in-line controls.

There should be a stock E-mail app that you can use with GMail. The GMail app is highly recommended though. If you have other accounts besides GMail that you want, there are plenty of third-party mail apps. I recommend K-9 Mail.

Thanks for the fast reply!

Yeah... I am still digging around all the notification menus. Will see if I find anything.

Headphones are Skullcandy but maybe they were iPhone compatible. So the ones that came with the phone will control volume? Sorry... wasn't going to open them if I wasn't going to use them.

Yeah... the stock Mail app uses IMAP and doesn't push Gmail anymore. It was Activesync that pushed Gmail on both iOS and Android. I think lots on both sides were having problems with it.

Loving this HTC One hardware...

I'm not 100% familiar with Skullcandys but I believe they do have some models that are Apple specific. Glad you're enjoying the phone.

You can see notifications at the lock screen if you go into settings> personalise> lock screen. Then just pick the productivity lockscreen

To turn off notification LED, go into Settings/Display/Notification Flash and de-select the items you don't want to see an LED flash for. Hope this helps.

Yes... productivity wallpaper lets you show 3 categories (email, messages, calendar, calls).

BUT... I can't have a custom wallpaper for the lock screen if I choose that. Seems so odd. I can only customize the wallpaper for the "wallpaper" choice. Arg.
