Standby Draining Battery?

Here are some tips to help reduce Standby Battery Drain:

1) If you know your phone is going to be in standby, try turning Auto Sync off. This will reduce the drain caused by interval and push sync apps.

2) It won't be as big a power saver as Auto Sync, but turning off your Always On Display (AOD) can give a few more minutes of juice in a pinch.

3) Turning off location services, Bluetooth and Mobile data will also give a noticeable improvement in power savings. However your phone is fairly crippled at this point.

4) Using the Mid power saving option is usually the best overall balanced option, but using the first option in conjunction with this will usually get you through a full day.

While for most it IS the biggest battery saver, I seldom like recommending turning Sync off because well, what's the point of having a smart phone that's going to be dumbed down, right? But yeah, it is one of the biggest things you can do to save power (since the phone is really doing nothing or not much while in stand by).

Most of these i do when i go to sleep because no one needs a smartphone when trying to sleep (obviously) though my mobile data is off unless needed i run mostly on wifi bluetooth when i wanna use my headphones and location is pretty much always off as locations do drain alot of battery when not in use.

Great practical advice and thanks for taking the time to share this. Much appreciated

Honestly...I was having battery problems that a factory reset wouldn't fix. Greenify fixed it for me. It was random apps, such as Panera bread, running in the background.

You could add turning off Adaptive display. While that mode brings out the pumpiest colors, it also monitors your screen actively to adjust saturation. I personally go Basic mode since it's the most color accurate.

I love my S8, but one of the things that surprised me the most is the terrible battery drain with this phone. My last 3 phones (Nexus 5X, Axon 7 mini, Honor 8) I had all set up the same way with the same apps and settings as I have on my S8, and they all had comparable battery usage consistent with the way I used the phone (and I used them all the same way). Upgrades to Nougat also helped with Standby battery conservation.

However, with the S8, I find myself having to constantly adjust many different settings from time to time just to try and alleviate the battery drain which was not an issue with the other phones. I really enjoy the S8, but I never thought the battery drain would be such an issue as it has turned out to be.

I'm going to try it

I too notice this situation (have an S8+), but not every day...in fact some days it blows me away just how many hours of SOT I obtain. I've been experimenting with adding my external NINE email app which I use for business since it perfectly syncs with my Work EAS account. But it's only been a few days, so I'll share my results in the coming weeks.

Have you tried anything yourself?

Well, I have been tinkering with it, and have made some progress (which I intend to report back on after more time has passed).

Essentially I have done only a few simple things which has helped in the way I use my phone;
1) Most of my social media accounts I access from the web browser instead of apps.

2) I use the Samsung browser over Chrome since it is supposed to be less energy demanding.

3) I charge my phone before I go to bed, but I turn off WiFi and Mobile Data overnight as I don't need those running while I sleep (I do need my phone on for work reasons). So far, this has allowed me to keep a 99 to 100 percent charge after 6-7 hours of little or now call activity.

4) I also have SystemPanel 2 installed which gives a lot of good information that is graphed out over time. Battery/CPU usage, WiFi and cell phone strength, etc. All of these things I can look through to see what may be causing issues (e.g. I found out that my cell signal isn't all that great at work which accounts for more battery drain during the day).

I'll continue to monitor all this and see how things go over time.

The steps you've taken appear very solid, and I can definitely see how those are benefiting you. I commend you for your efforts, however in my case I don't wish to implement exactly the same regiment.
Hey does that power monitoring app really give detailed information?

SystemPanel 2 works great. I used the original one until Marshmallow broke it, but they regrouped and have a new monitor that works with an updated OS (Root will give you more detailed information such as specific app usage/details).

I suggest you try it if you're interested. It does next to nothing to the battery and can be easily uninstalled.

Thanks, much appreciated!

My standby drain has been worst since the latest update on my S8+...

It used to drain like 4 - 5% overnight, now I lose more than 15%

Literally no idea why

My Android security patch level is dated October 1, 2017. What is your current version that's draining your battery so much faster?

Yeah, exactly the same one.

I think my battery is back to normal!! I cleared cache using Device Maintainance last night and I think it helps :D

Good move, I typically run it once daily and I notice the improvement.

I just received a system update today (around 231 MB) which stated it was for 'System Performance' upgrade/tweaks etc. It didn't update my security level/patch, but after playing with the phone for a while it sure seems as though the battery is lasting longer.

I'll need to play around some more, but so far it does seem to not drain as fast. *fingers crossed*
