Rooting is when you unlock the device beyond means in which the OEM has intended. It allows you access to vital system level files to make changes, mods and much more to your device. When doing so yes you do void your warranty but there is usually a method for each device on how to return back to factory stock state in the event you need to have your device serviced or repaired leaving no signs behind of you rooting your device, thus your warranty is not voided :)

Each device has its own ways to achieve root, if you do choose to do so then take the time to read everything carefully and ask questions if your unsure and someone will be more than happy to help you out.

Shutdown sounds can be disabled normally after obtaining root by simply renaming a certain file in your /system/media/ directory to disable it or replace it with a different file of the same file type.

Members more familiar with this device's layout can aid you in achieving this better.

Good luck.
