Status bar question and e-mail question

So I'm a DINC2 user now after realizing my Droid X was more of a pain than a phone. I was OK with Sense, but it only took about a week before the cool weather widgets got old and I was replacing Sense with Launcer Pro (I love the 5 rows of icons on the homescreen and the better scrolling in the app drawer).

Anyhow, I have two questions about my awesome HTC phone.

First, on the status bar, there is an icon I never saw on my Moto phone. It looks like a circle with a cross in it. There are tiny triangles at 6, 9, and 12. At 3 is a sideways wifi looking thing. What is this for? It generally shows up to the left of my WiFi icon. I can't for the life of me figure out what it is for. It is even on in airplane mode.

Second question: I am connected to an exchange server for e-mail. After opening and reading a message when I choose delete, it automatically opens up the previous message in my list. Is there a way to make it go back to the list of messages? I've looked in the settings for the mail app (I'm using the default) and I can't seem to find anything that lets you choose to return to the message list or to a prior message after choosing delete. I know where the setting was on my Moto phone, but I can't find it here.

Now if I could just get GB root...

The symbol means you have location on. I don't use the stock mail so I am not sure there, but k9 in the market may be a good third party alternative.
