still have horrible reception

Just got back from tech support at our local Verizon store and he did something that has definitely helped my reception(Bars are the same but reception is better)! He went to phone and dialed *#*#4636#*#* this brings up a screen that includes Phone Info. At this point click Menu then select Radio Band, a force quit screen pops up(this is normal) click ok then scroll down to CDMA Auto then hit Home! That's it!

Great tip you might want to add this to the tips and trick thread :D

I just did this, but I forgot to check what my signal strength was at before. Right now it's at -76. Oh well, I'm gonna believe that my signal got better. It should be safe to switch it back to GSM to check the signal and redo it, right?

I tried this, and decided to do a *228 to update the PRL and it would not update. Switched back and Update was OK.

Just a data point.

Double check. Mine said GSM (auto) so I tried this, but lost EvDo rev.A It put my phone into 1x-and no change in signal strength for me. Don't I want EvDo rev.A??

No, it is not safe to switch to GSM!!

Your phone was not set to GSM to begin with. If you go into the Phone Information menu and DON'T hit the menu key, you can scroll down a bit to see what your Preferred Network type is set to. It had to be set to one of the CMDA variants already (this phone doesn't have a GSM radio). Pressing the menu key and then "select radio band" resets your radio; after the force close, it will always default to GSM Auto. You can do it 100 times, it will do the same thing. So just because you go through that procedure and it says "GSM Auto" after the force close does not mean that your phone was set to GSM Auto to begin with.

The thought with this procedure is that resetting the radio will improve reception, sort of like rebooting a sluggish Windows PC. It does NOT rectify misapplied settings.

Yes, you do.

This is one of the ways that using the test menu (4636) can bugger your phone. It can also switch the 3G radio to Rev. 0 mode. If you are stuck on 1x or Rev. 0, it should correct with a power cycle (power off, power on).

If that doesn't work, you might try resetting the radio again (follow immediately by a reboot).

My 12 hour old Dinc is going back. Very poor reception. My Droids seem to just grab the signal and give me great reception. Hate to send is back but need a phone that works well in the reception dept.

When I first got mine it had poor reception(7/2-7/18) but I guess its "broke in" now ever since it thought I was going to send it back ,,same signal as DX since 7/21

for me that means that i had a thought in fifth grade of something, that someone whose career was in teaching science. Had not considered. I just needed to share that and hope someone found it interesting

Always strive to think outside the box. Love the story
