Still indecisive! HTC One or S4?

I love my s4, I can't put it down.
You will love all the air gesture features, the camera, the split screen feature, it is packed, and Samsung supports their phones with updates and upgrades.

Sent from my amazing Samsung Galaxy S4... there is none better!

You do not know that. Many people find the air gestures useless. OP may or may not find these features useful. Also, samsung is well known for having awful support.

So here's where things changed for me a little bit. I was watching the cheesy Samsung Keynote for the GS4 just hoping to get blown away. So there I was watching this awful song and dance thing, and saw the new Touchwiz UI. Then I looked down at my GS3, and at that exact moment it hit me like a ton of bricks; I absolutely hate TouchWiz.

I then began to look at what new features the GS4 and the HTC One both had and after going through the pro's and con's of each. I made the decision to get the phone that gave me features that I would use on a daily basis, and the HTC One came out the winner. Don't get me wrong, I loved showing off all of the cool features that I had on my GS3, but at the end of the day I never found myself using them. They just weren't practical enough, and they didn't work properly all the time.

I wanted the larger 5 inch screen on the S4, but I also like the idea of being able to see my screen when I'm outside. The HTC One won that contest. I don't have bluetooth in my car, and I use my phones as my Navigation, so the HTC front facing speakers won me over in that department too. I have a DSLR that I carry around with me as my main camera, but for those times when I don't have it with me (usually at night, or when i'm out and about), I wanted to be able to capture those pictures and the HTC One and it's low light performance won me over there too.

It's a hard decision because both phones are great at many things, but at the end of the day the HTC One presented more features that I know I would use on a daily basis. Readable screen when outdoors, great speakers, a great camera, and Zoe's (those are bleeping amazing).
I used to be on of those guys who knocked the iphone for not having a removable battery, and limited storage but I've never once purchased a second battery for my phones. Yes, I know that argument makes me a fanboy. Instead I've been using an external battery which does the trick. I'm happy that I went with the One, and I wish HTC would do a better job at showing people some of their cool new features that they will use everyday on their phones, whereas all of the waving and hovering and the S4 will be really cool when showing off the phone, but something I just wouldn't use. Plus, Touchwiz has always felt too laggy for me, and based on the videos I saw, it's still the same with the S4.

Samsung would have won me over if they really made Touchwiz lighter, and ditched the neon greens, ugly icons, and overall cheesyness Life Companion business. I also wanted the bezel to be made out of some kind of metal. I could have lived with the poor readability when outdoors, and poor speaker placement (once you hear an HTC One you'll understand), but I couldn't live with Touchwiz for another year. HTC stepped it up in a major way, and I voted with my dollars.

I've been with Android since the G1 on launch day and have used many devices since including iphones and this is by far the best phone I've ever used hands down.

If you're going to be stuck using it for 2 years, you should definitely get the S4. Or, after a year or so, plan on the battery in your One starting to seriously degrade and lasting half as long (or worse) on a charge before your 2-year contract is up.

Have any facts to back that statement up, or are you just looking for a fight? Between my wife and I over the years, these are the phones we've had and have never experienced any battery related issues on any of them. HTC G1, Mytouch 3g, Motorola Droid1, Galaxy S1, Motorola Droid X, HTC Thunderbolt, Motorola Bionic, HTC Sensation, and Galaxy S3. So show me where you get your data from, because my real world use is telling me something completely different.

I just got my s4 yesterday and cannot put it down
It is amazing technology
You can say all you want about Sl Samsung "gimmicks" but they are amazing
The latest TV commercial points out all the great technology this phone puts all others to shame!
But go ahead and get your One.

I'm glad you're happy with your S4. I was really going back and fourth between the two. You have fun swiping your hand over the phone, and I'll enjoy listening to the wonderful sounds coming out of my amazing speakers. The Samsung commercial shows me a bunch of features that I won't use after the first week. After that when I'll want to use my phone, I'm not going to rely on fun features that won't always work the way they're supposed to.

So now you assume the features won't work? Joke. I had an s2 for over a year and Samsung just pushed jelly bean to it which was great!
And the speaker on this is amazing. I rarely have to use my jambox.
I do like the idea of front facing speakers though, (that is why I bought the Nexus 10. Best tablet out there). But the camera features, the air gestures, I can see many uses and am using them already. The commercial is awesome.
To each his own, right.
Good luck.
Spreading the love of my s4.

There's no question for me, I like HTC phones but they've chosen to make the One available only as a GSM phone with no removable battery or SD card, three deal breakers!

I live in an area where T-Mobile has poor to no signal and AT&T isn't much better. I also travel where only Verizon offers any signal at all.

Results of the comparison? I'll probably go back to BlackBerry, I really miss mine...

No, I do think they'll work as advertised. I just don't need any of them. The ability to use the phone while wearing gloves might be more important to some, but I live in SoCal and rarely need to do so, and when I do, I wear gloves that have capacative friendly tips. Even so, that's probably the one feature that really impressed me. The hovering thing looked cool, but didn't seem like it would add the user experience, and just complicate an already easy task. To say one is better than the other is hard, but The Verge, Engadget, Gizmodo, and Cnet, all did. Seeing how they get their hands on more of these than any of us here speaks volumes.

My girlfriend just picked up the One. She liked the look of it and that was all she went on, so I will summarize what I've noticed. She nor I have had our hands on the S4, so I will leave that to others. Her uses consist mostly of social networks, picture taking, and recently candy Crush Saga. Outside of that, tons and tons of texting...

Cosmetically, the One is gorgeous. On looks and feel alone, it is the nicest, most solid feeling Android phone I've ever put my hands on. The screen is also gorgeous, and compared to my MAXXHD, when 6 inches away, the higher ppi of the screen is immediately noticeable. I usually use my phones about 2 feet from my eyes and from that distance, the screen looks good, but not anymore than my phone.

The camera function is pretty good. It puts the camera in my MAXXHD to shame, but that's not saying much. I dare say it takes as good of a picture as my Canon S100 P&S camera in daylight. I'm very impressed. Granted I'm not a pro photog or even a prosumer photog. She hasn't taken many low light photos yet, so no comments there.

I used to have the Incredible and Thunderbolt, so I am used to Sense and I actually like it. I can't say whether it is less bloated or not, but it doesn't seem to lag or affect the phone in any way. I have to say, I'm a bit surprised by Blinkfeed. I hate that I like it so much. My gf has FB and Twitter on it, but for fun, I only put in my sports teams and ESPN and it was heaven! All my sports news in one swipe without having to open any programs. Currrently, I'm looking for something similar for my MAXXHD.

We are in NYC and LTE signal was not an issue. WiFi at my place, her place, and my parent's place was also not a problem. Voice calls came in clear without any drops.

Now for some cons. Removeable memory... or lack of it. My gf doesn't store much on her phone and she was using 8GB on her last one so the 32GB is more than enough for her. For me, though, I would need to get the 64GB. It is limiting, but the fact that a 64GB version is available is great, if you're on ATT. The non-removeable battery. I'm used to it with my MAXXHD but my battery lasts for 24+hours and I've never needed to rush to find a charger. The One doesn't last nearly as long and would have been an issue for me. I used to carry spare batteries with me when I had my previous phones. My gf always used to have her phone plugged in while she was working anyway and never carried around a spare battery previously, so it was again a non-issue for her. It lasts longer for her than her previous phone did, and she finds she doesn't need to keep it plugged in during the day. The One for her has been extremely power efficient when on standby. There are some navigation quirks which can be attributed to Sense which make no sense but I'm sure will become second nature as you use the phone more. I don't find it more or less intuitive than AOSP except for the fact that I am more familiar with AOSP. It took my gf a few minutes to get acquainted with Sense and she's coming from Touchwiz.

One thing I did notice was a slow charging rate. I don't know if it was just a perception, but using the charger it came with, it seemed to take a long time to recharge.

When I chose the MAXXHD, there were two reasons I chose it over the S3 and the DNA. First was one-handed use friendly size. The One is the same width as the MAXXHD and is easy to use one-handed for me. Second was the battery life of the MAXXHD. I don't think I'd trade up to the HTC One if VZW offered it with 64GB because of the battery. I usually use my phone about 4-6 hours screen on time and need my phone to work from 6am until about midnight on a regular basis. I don't think the One would last that long and without a removable battery, it would, well, suck for me. This along with what seemed to me a long recharge time, was a deal breaker for me. My gf is able to charge her phone all day if necessary and never bothered carrying a second battery around previously. She loves it. I am very impressed by it, but it doesn't fit my requirements.

I'm very surprised on how few have mentioned one the best features of the HTC One "Boom Sound" amplified stereo frontal speakers, zero gap build = sealed speaker enclosure = ridiculously amazing sound. I've had the One since it was released and I've never enjoyed and liked a phone as much i do with the one. I've been working in the wireless industry and been around mobile phones since the late 90's and the HTC One imo the best device I've had so far.

it sounds subliminally like you are leaning towards the s4 so go for what you like

I'm leaning to the HTC One. Just like most cycling apps, Endomondo provides audio feedback. RIght now, I use a bluetooth headset and use only one earbud so I have minimum hearing restriction. With boom sound, I believe I could eliminate the headset entirely and hear the feedback even with the phone in a seat post bag.

Posted my thoughts on XDA:

I would equate the S4 to having a really hot chick sitting on your face and then ripping ***, totally kills the experience.

This is the most brilliant **** I have ever had the pleasure of reading on this website. If I could add a like for my chick too, I would, because we both came close to pissing the bed reading this this morning. Thank you.

I love this phone. Took back my s4 for it. But be careful. Although the sound is great quality. It's loudness isn't that much greater than the s4 was. So the use you described may not work. Just an fyi my opinion of course

It's a feature many have no use for as they listen to media via headphones and/or keep their phones on vibrate. I had the One for a week before giving it to my teenage daughter. She gets far more use out of Boomsound than I ever would.

I didn't read your original post, but IMO don't go buy CNET, gizmodo, A.A., etc like each of us they are looking for certain specs to where the regular guy person won't....Cnet bascially liked the memory, removable battery and camera (only a little more than the one). If your on ATT wait till this weekend when for $250 the 32gb S4 comes out.....otherwise your stuck with 9gb or so which imo is a true deal breaker!!!!! Apps, music off amazon, etc all are stuck on there not your SD card, I don't even think if you root the phone apps can go on the phone....with music ya you can use cloud, or load up from computer, but sorta defeats the point imo.
I got the chance to play with the S4 over the weekend and I enjoyed, but for me, it was the S3 with a more solid body and better shape....the screen didn't impress me, I enjoy the LCD more, but that's opinion, camera is great on the ONE, lets be realistic, this is not a true camera, still a camera phone, also, the stereo speakers are a HUGE plus, with beats audio, HTC finally got it right! I recorded a local bands acoustic set and it sounded and looked amazing!! No distortion, I tried a live full blown concert and it to sounded great!! Night and day from my Note 2, S3 and One X+.....either way you can't go wrong! If you travel a lot and need that spare battery or hate using the cloud for pics, go for the S4, 32gb model, otherwise, grab a nice case, I have the white and black speck that has a great grip to it! People always ask about it and the phone still looks beautiful and get the One.....you will be happy no matter what I am sure!!! Both future proof for sure!

Its not for everyone, but even when your phone rings with a custom tone, it is night and day imo! I also think they nailed beats audio....finally....you can tell a true difference imo.

I very rarely listen to music or watch movies without headphones or a bluetooth speaker but to imply that music/media is the only value of the dual speakers wreaks of someone desperately trying to devalue the qualities of the One in an attempt to try to persuade others that the S4 is the superior device. Its funny how in reviews people always complain about how quiet, tinny, etc that speakers are and then once a phone comes out with great external speakers people like you attempt to diminish the value of it. Prior to the One the only devices I had with acceptable external speakers were the Bold 9000 and the Nokia N95 and this thing blows them away. Like I said I rarely listen to music through the external speakers but it has been tops of all of the many devices I own when it comes to hearing my phone while in my pocket or in a noisy environment, making a call on speakerphone on the rare occasion I need to, watching the occasional embedded video in my browser or youtube clip and not having to cup the speakers with my hand to hear the clip.

They are both excellent devices and I'm glad you love your S4, but we all like different things and value different qualities in a device. I couldn't care less for any of the features other than perhaps Airview on the S4 which I loved with the Note 2. Cool, indeed, but as useful as the "boomsound" on the One? Not for me. I actually love the way the S4 feels in my hand, how light it is, and like the camera slightly better than on the One, but none of those things are good enough for me to want to put up with Touchwiz and give up the things I love about the One.

Both phones have equally impressive output thru headphones, the S4 might be a touch louder. Beats is only software so it's easy for other companies to mimic the affect.

Nah, it's completely subjective. Sure there are some peeps that listen to music thru the external headphones and look at commercials for the One, that's who they're marketing towards. Time will tell however whether that was a wise decision. I can only say from my personal use that nice external speakers was a gimmick and not something I would ever use. I'm sure there are features on the S4 that many will never use as well.
