Hi I'm currently a Samsung user and considering this phone. I use the stock email app on Samsung a lot and can't find any real detail about the one on this phone.

Key is
Does it handle group emails well?

I use group email a lot and the group has to go in bcc. On Samsung this is as easy as typing the groups name in the bcc box and it will add the group. Other apps require copy and paste and all sorts of nonsense to do this.

Can this phone do this out of the box?

My advice would be to use "Nine" email client... I use it on my pixel 2 XL currently and will use it on the mate 20 pro I've on order.

Nine is by far the best Android email client.

Totally agree with this, i use Nine for my corporate email and it has all the features needed for this, bonus is it uses application level security rather than device level etc. (I've tried literally all others!)

The built-in email app is very similar to the Samsung Email app, and seems to handle group emails well, it creates Threads around the group emails from what I am seeing in my mailbox right now

Just downloaded nine. Was keen to try based on these recommendations. The app is not good! It set my Gmail to 7 days of syncing and can I find a way to change that? Nope. That is not intuitive or useful, 7 days. Then went to look for contact help, no option for that either, FAQ which don't help or send feedback logs.

Really disappointed.

Blue mail, had it on my last 4 phones, Pixelbook and my Huawei MediaPad M3, syncs great and is super customisable

Awesome, thanks for that. Generally the stock apps seem good, just aware how good the Samsung one is and would hate to take too big a step back.

I'm in the same boat, used to Samsung email on my S9+ but have just switched to a Mate 20 pro. The default looks good, but send a bit more basic than the Samsung app. one thing that is rubbish is that there seems to be no push notification for Gmail, only Hotmail.

Thanks. Yeah that's not great through I am kinda ok with every 15 mins or so. Does it manage group emails ok? Especially as bcc?
