Today, the headphones that came with my phone suddenly stopped working while I was on the bus. I believe it has something to do with the inline mic due to the following reasons:

1. Headphones work when plugged into my computer.
2. If I plug my headphones in and out rapidly on my phone, eventually it will get detected for a brief period then disconnect (I dislike this method since it could damage the jack on the phone)
3. when I plug those same headphones into my phone using a neutral stereo plug it works fine but the icon only shows the headphones and not the mic.

Methods I have used to fix this issue but to no avail:

1. Restarted the phone and cleaned the jack as best I could.
2. wiped the cache partition

This is quite annoying especially since these were the headphones provided with the phone and I have been using it fine for over a year. Is this a hardware issue with the jack or a software issue involving the mic?

Welcome to Android Central! Do other headphones work in the phone? If not, then something is wrong with the jack.

I dont have another pair of headphones to test in my phone. However I have tried plugging in these headphones into another cellphone and the same results came up; not detected unless I plug it in using the neutral stereo plug. I believe this repeated result pretty much confirms that something is wrong with my headphones specifically the mic connection on the jack. If I am missing something please let me know.

Thanks!

You may be right, in which case it may just be that the headphone plug or cable are now faulty. Headphones that come with the phone are often not particularly high quality. I'd suggest looking for a high quality replacement.
