So I am still having problems receiving text from using the app "Textra" Pro version (paid). I am not sure if it's because I keep putting the apps to sleep in Battery Optimization or what but I had enough with missed text messages.

Now I am back to the Original Messaging App that came with the phone. Does anyone know if we can customize the background? I want the theme to be black like textra. Also, can we download emoticons?

Thanks for any input

You can't theme it or change the background in the app. You can only change your system theme. Mine is black with just colored lines for the messages.

You can absolutely change the background (I'm assuming you mean the messaging app wallpaper?). Just go into the messages app, click the 3 dots in top right. Choose settings>backgrounds.

I can't speak for emoticons on stock keyboard since I use SwiftKey but can definitely download emoticons with SwiftKey

That's true. I forgot about just having an all black picture from your gallery as your background.
The conversation bubbles are controlled by the theme, though. I don't think you can change these like you could a year or two ago.
