Stock Message App Question

I like to get delivery statuse when sending messages, but when this is turned on in the stock messaging app it's actually sending out a notification complete with sound, status bar icon and notification in the status bar shade.
In other messaging apps it simply shows "delivered" without sending out a separate notification. Is there a way to turn off the separate notification for delivery yet still see if it was delivered?

i have the S8 (still) and i can see that option in settings- >chat settings -> default message type ->set on chat messages, but it might not work with all devices, and only while connected to data/wifi. i never keep the main delivery report option on because i hate the notification from the bottom of my heart.
