In the past you could change the android messages notification sound. With 8.1 it only uses the main notification sound.

Is there something I am missing?

I am able to Chand individual contact but not the main text sound.

Mine works just fine. Go into the app settings then notifications. You'll see an option to change the notification sound.

I have tried that but also changes the main notification sound too.

Strange and I have a clean install too
