OK, something has changed - I now get the same behaviour as you. Maybe an update sorted things out. Will change it to be my default SMS app and see how it goes.

Were you having the limit perhaps on the pop up reply of the stock SMS? This seems to be limited to 160 while there is no such limit if composing from within the app.
