Before anyone flames, I have read several threads regarding this and none of them seem to work for me. I am a first time Android user (Epic 4G).

I am using Handcent and have disabled (unchecked) notifications in the stock messaging app. However, whenever I receive an sms, I get two notifications (audible and in the notification area). One from Handcent and one from the stock app. How can this be corrected? Is this normal?

I don't use Handcent so I can't speak for that, but you probably need to turn off notifications in two areas to completely disable the regular messages.

First from home screen go to Menu>Settings>Sound & Display>Notification Ringtone> and set to Silent.

Next to go Messaging > Menu > Settings >and uncheck notifications. You may also want to change this to silent as well. If you do not want Vibration on text messages turn it off in this menu too.

Ok, I will give this a try.

sms sound needs to be set to NONE if I remember... (kinda odd) silent just puts the phone on vibrate- if you want the phone to ring- but not be audibly notified of SMS you need to select NONE for the SMS ringtone.(it's at the top of the SMS ringtone choice list- I assumed the default setting was at the top- thus I didn't see it at first.)

I agree this is confusing- but it's how you shut off audible SMS tones and still have your phone ring audibly.

also helps to disable the vibration function if you are trying to completely disable vibration to conserve battery
