Stock to Custom Rom...

Okay, so I'm new to the Droid family (don't worry, I won't never leave lol)...but I want something a little different. So I was thinking about going with the new Apex rom, but I was wondering if I needed to root my phone as my first step??

Yes you do. Can't do anything like that without rooting. Use an app called z4root. Google it and you will find it. Have fun.

Apex is great. Yes root is required.

It's really easy to do everything, just read the steps and follow them carefully.

You will also need to purchase Koush's Bootstrapper for the Droid X from the market to install custom ROMs.

Yes, definitely the Droid Bootstrapper app! Boot to recovery and make a backup before doing anything!
