Stolen Phone Keeps Showing Up on Device Manger Even Though I've Sent Wipe Commands

Last Friday I had my phone stolen off a bar (Nexus 6P).

I suspended the number with my carrier (Verizon). I got a new phone and transferred my number to it. Of course, I changed my passwords for Google and the two factor authentication now comes to my new phone.

It was immediately turned off so I couldn't track it. I did send a wipe command from Android Device Manager (and Androidlost.com) which is supposed to wipe it the next time it was powered up.

But... Android Device Manager indicates that it was last seen just a few hours ago. How is that possible if I sent a wipe command to it?

We need a way to actually destroy all of the data and OS remotely on a phone/tablet that is stolen. Actually a remote way to destroy the phone would be best, so that the phone could never be used again.
