As my title says, I am trying to add more privacy to my android phone. I would like to stop users (one in particular) from knowing when I have read their text messages or when I am typing a reply to them. I'm not even sure what those features/capabilities are called. Is it possible to prevent people from seeing those status features?
I have installed an app called Handcent to try to accomplish this but I'm not savvy enough to understand what the various setting really mean. Any help would be very much appreciated.

If it's a text message, the stock app does not show you've read it. Any other app, you should be able to turn that off in the settings of the app. Should be able to turn off "send read" report in settings.

Thanks for the quick reply. I don't seem to have a setting for "Send Read Reports" only "Retrieve". Perhaps I am missing the obvious here but it seems to only have "Request Read Report" and "Request Delivery Report" on both sms and mms messages. Forgive my lack of knowledge and understanding on this stuff. This is my first (semi) smart phone and I am very slow in learning this technology.

By the way, it is a text message and they can see whether I answered and if I am typing with the standard messaging app that came with my phone.

If the person in question can see when you're typing and can see whether you've read their message or not, then you are not using SMS. That is not a supported feature of SMS. You must be using a different chat protocol. MMS does contain delivery receipts but still does not have the ability to see when another user is typing. I hope that helps. The person on the other end might just be speaking generically especially if they're an iPhone user. Since iMessage is integrated with the stock messaging app and blended with SMS/MMS, you can see when a person is typing and also the read status within it but only when chatting over the iMessage protocol. So they may have told you that you can see it when in reality, they can't for you and only for those who also have iMessage.

[Go to Applications in Settings. Choose Messaging. Choose Chat Settings. Then you will be able to turn off those features.]

I had the same problem w/ my Samsung S6 Edge +.

Hit your Text Message Icon.
Click on "More" in the upper rt corner.
Hit "Settings".
Hit "Chat Settings".
Swipe to OFF on "Send Read Receipt".

Now others w Samsung S6 or higher will no longer know if you read the message, and will not see you typing !

Del Carto,
U need to
press text message app
then then top upper right corner touch "more"
Touch settings
Enhanced messaging should be off
This should take care of the problem
Even if the other person has enhanced messaging on as long as yours is off they can't see if you are typing or if you've seen it. Hope this helps you out.
