Storage being eaten by cached media files

Hi,

I have a Sony Xperia E4 running Android 4.4.4

I noticed recently that my storage space was filling up fast. It turns out that every time I watch a video on Youtube, BBCiplayer, etc., two files are created and stored, one named ACodec.OMX.MTK.AUDIO.DECODER.AA.x (where x is a number), which is 0kb and one called ACodec.OMX.MTK.VIDEO.DECODER.AV.x, the size of which depends on the length of video I have watched.

I assume that the system is caching all of the media files that I stream, but it never gets rid of them, and I have to manually delete them, which is a pain, as they eat up my internal storage space pretty quickly. Previous android devices have not done this as far as I'm aware, and I can't find anything about the issue on google.

Is there a fix for this?

Thanks

Re: Storage being eaten by cached media files

Welcome to Android Central! Are you able to clear the app caches by going to Settings>Storage and tapping Cached Data? That's a useful thing to do from time to time.

Re: Storage being eaten by cached media files

Thanks B Diddy, but these files aren't stored actually as app cache. They appear as 'misc' files. Clearing the cache doesn't get rid of them

Hmm, not sure then.

Re: Storage being eaten by cached media files

I have the same problem over here. Also, I have a Sony Xperia E4 too.

Re: Storage being eaten by cached media files

Glad to hear I'm not alone! This problem is driving me crazy. I tried a factory reset. No joy. I tried completely updating the phone using the Sony PC Companion. Same problem. Sony say they won't give support because the problem is with 3rd party apps, but it happens with Youtube, which comes pre-loaded on the phone! Can't find any information online, except that some people seem to ave a similar problem with Windows phones, but there doesn't seem to be a fix

Re: Storage being eaten by cached media files

Try dialling *#9900# and Delete Dumpstate / Logcat (#2)

It's safe. Can't remember why it works.
Clears many gbs of build up for some users.

Re: Storage being eaten by cached media files

Hi, the same happens to me and I don't know what to do... Sometimes if I delete these files, also the whatsapp attachments are deleted, i.e. pics and videos. I have the same Sony mobile.
Did you find a solutions so you can share with me?
Thanks!
