Storage Capacity

I thought the Essential phone was supposed to have 128 GB storage capacity. However, when I checked my storage settings information, I saw that the phone only has 116 GB capacity. It indicates 26.42 GB used of 116 GB. Screenshot attached.

It cannot be that the 12 missing GB are allocated to the system because system usage is one of the items listed, showing 15.9 GB used. All my other phones indicate the advertised storage capacity, such as 19 GB used of 32 GB or 12 GB used of 16 GB, for 32 and 16 GB phones respectively.

I searched the forums for an explanation but did not find anything on this. Hope I did not miss it but any explanation would be appreciated. Anyone else have their Essential phone indicate storage capacity of less than 128 GB?

I hope this helps. All storage is in the power of 2 (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128) but that is not quite what you actually get. The above link gives an explanation. Although, using those numbers, 119 is the number I get, so it is really not precise.

Thank you, Morriea. This is the new thing I learned today. You are also correct that according to the formula, we should be getting 119 GB but since it is imprecise I suppose I can leave it at that. Does your Essential phone also indicate 116 GB like mine does?

Yes. 116GB on mine as well.
