So I loaded up all my music on this thing, then did the unlock/root and it wiped the entirety of the internal storage. So just a heads up when doing this process it wipes everything on the storage. Anyone know if this happens when switching ROMS?

i believe when u wipe in CWM it leaves the virtual SDcard partition alone. if you wipe inside the phone it wipes everything.

The rom that is out now does the wipe command, but I don't know if it wipes everything, or just specific directories.

I've installed two rooms so far and neither called for anything other than wipe dalvik and cache.

Unlock wipes everything as does a Factory Reset.

Okay awesome, so once I get into putting some ROMS and kernels(with tethering) on here I shouldn't have to resync all my music. DoubleTwist takes a while to sync it over wifi.

Lol every guide to unlocking the phone warns you that it will completely wipe everything... not picking on you, but at least you learned now :)

As has been said, Wiping data/factory reset done from CWM will leave your sd untouched. Doing it from inside the phone will apparently wipe the sd as well. So no, when flashing ROMs you should never have to worry about losing stuff that is on your sd. Every ROM is going to have its own instructions about whether you need to wipe data or you'll be just fine with a cache/dalvik wipe, but again, your sd should be safe going forward now that you got the unlocking done :)

Oh I knew the unlocking would wipe the phone but I thought it was only wiping the cache and what not not clearing out the entire internal storage.

Why? You only need to worry about once, when you unlock.. After that the Virtual sd card isn't touched.

Not to sound like an idiot, but where is this Virtual sd card that is protected? If I create a new directory called "audiobooks" off of the root via file explored on my PC, will that get wiped or be protected? In other words, do I need to create a sd-card directory and put stuff in there to have it protected, or is any directory I create going to be safe?

When you open the phone up from your file explorer on your PC (assuming your running windows as I don't know about other OS'), what you are looking at is your internal sd. So anything you do there should be fine and "protected" for the future if you're unlocked now.

To test it, you should see the DCIM folder there, go in and find where it stores pictures (Camera folder), add a new one or two and confirm they show on your phone. That's def your int sd then.
