Strange Display Issue

I've seen similar issues posted on other sites, but no real good answer, so I thought I'd post it here for comments and suggestions.

After automatically updating to the last Android 5.1 OTA, my screen started to do this strange thing. it would display either ghost artifacts or vertical colour lines that were related to what should have been displayed. For example on startup, the usual white ASUS was a set of vertical white lines, if the display was multi-coloured, the vertical lines would be aligned with the colours. The lines started from about half way up the screen and went down to the bottom. The top half was not affected, so I could see the top half of whatever was displayed, but the bottom half was all vertical lines. This was infrequent at first, but then became more frequent until the phone became virtually unusable.

I went through a couple of steps to try to fix it:

1. left it turned off for a few days, then loaded Android 6 from the ASUS website. This worked for the first restart but then the same display issue came back.
2. spoke to ASUS support, on their recommendation did a factory reset, again the first one worked for a bit, then I tried it again but now nothing worked.
3. spoke with support again, got an RMA. They made it clear that if the issue is impact damage I'm going to foot the bill. I've requested an "advanced replacement" so that I'm not out of a phone for another 2 weeks.

When I was trying to get it to work, I noticed a pattern to the issue. If the display colour, or predominant colour was "dark" in the middle third of the screen, the bottom would go wonky as I've described. If the middle third of the display was light or white, the entire screen was okay. So for example, if I had a white website, and scrolled down (or up) to an area that had darker colours, as soon as the dark colour crossed the boundary (about 1/2 inch from the vertical center of the screen, above or below center) the bottom half turned into vertical lines or left a ghost image, or pieces of both.

I have not damaged the phone, dropped or bent it at all. The one thing that I noticed after the update for 5.1 was that it felt hotter than usual.

That's all I have, hopefully someone can help figure out what this is. I'm not expecting to hear much from ASUS themselves, just whether I pay or they cover it. If anyone else is getting this weirdness, join in the conversation. :)

Thanks in advance.

Thanks B.Diddy,
I think I went further than safe mode when I did a factory reset, there's nothing on it now except the bare minimum apps (I didn't log in to either Google or Asus so none of my old data/config/apps were loaded). Having said that, I did go into safe mode and tried to clean out any non-essential apps, and disabled as much as I thought was safe to do. I've also now wiped the cache partition and restarted it.

FYI, prior to starting the steps you suggested, it seems that by leaving it off for a couple of days, the screen effects are almost gone. There is a flicker mid-screen at the initial power up, just above the bright "ASUS", but after running it for a couple of hours there's no noticeable affect. It's still there after wiping the cache. I'm going to leave it on for a day or so & see if there's any degradation.
