Streaming to PS3 via DLNA

Does anyone know if the streaming video can work in both directions on the Epig 4G to a PS3 and vice versa? Also, does AllShare convert file types if needed? Or what file types can AllShare stream I guess?

I was just thinking that I can use my Epic to stream my downloaded avi's rather then my mediacenter PC located across the house.

Yup, all you need are the two items connected to the same network. Turn DLNA on in the phone, and search for media servers on the PS3. You can't see everything on the screen this way, that would require a cable directly connected to the tv, but if you video tape something, take pictures, or have video files on your sd card, it can be viewed through the ps3.

A round of thanks for all:D I was searching around the other night seeing what all devices supported DLNA. I've never used it (that I know of) so I was unsure. I already have my 360 but am planning on getting a PS3 for Gran Turismo and it would be nice to stream things back and forth. I have a solid network in my house (expensive Cisco gaming router) so in theory everything should be a breeze.

I use it like you wouldn't believe. I'm watching Top Gear right this moment that I saved to my PS3 that i pulled from my computer. Beautiful thing is transcoding should automatically put files in to a file that the PS3 can play. Let me know if you want a how-to set up your computer to stream files to the PS3. You don't need extra software on windows, media player works nicely. On mac, I use Vuze.

I finally set up my home network on a couple weeks ago. I was just using it for internet prior. I get everything up and running with my 360. Watched a movie or two with the wife. Then BAM! My external HD on the 360 took a dump. Unfortunately you can't watch videos without the HD because it downloads a codec. I was going to buy another used HD from gamestop or something but I need the money for my Epic fund.

I've always been a 360 guy but this just annoys me. This is my 3rd 360. Now 2nd Hard Drive. Oh yeah, and I lose all my saved game data.

So... what will I have to do to watch videos on my Xbox 360 with DLNA?

It should be a recognized device under your profile. I just go to my videos and it lists portable device, matt's computer, etc. I imagine the Epic will show up as long as you have a network for it to link in to.

So if I connect my Epic to the same wifi that my 360 is plugged into, it should just see it?

Sweeeeeeeet.

Question 2: my dad's gonna get a DLNA-ready TV, an Epic, and get rid of his ISP internet and use wireless hotspot instead. Will we be able to watch DLNA videos on his TV or does the TV need to be plugged into a router?

you have to use the all share app. but yes, it should recognize without any additional setup needed on the ps3 end.... OOHHH 1 more thing, your router has to support DLNA/UPnP. You can see this easily on the ps3 if, when you test connection, next to UPnP there is a yes.

Who was this in response to, rufflez? If it was to me, well my dad doesn't have a PS3. If it was to someone else, well... proceed :D

Yeah, sorry, 360. It should recognize it automatically, but I've never used a 360, so I dunno for sure.

As for your second question, is the tv wifi or will it require an ethernet cord? If so, yeah, a router is required. If its wifi, then I dunno.

I believe the 360 can only use Windows Media Center. It's not fully DLNA supported to work with any device... personally, I hope I'm wrong- but I have both the PS3 and 360, so I'm guessing I'm covered.

Unless the quality is just trash- I may just stick with the analog cable as that will work with ANY TV- the amount I'd use this is questionable anyway however.

I use the media on my PS3 way more than I use it for gaming. I bought a 320GB hard drive back when I got it (was the biggest laptop battery, 7200RPM at the time). I love it. The quality of video is amazing. I'll either upgrade to a 500GB or larger when its full or just do the netflix thing when I get a permanent address. External hard drives are supported on the PS3 in FAT32 format, so you're limited of file sizes of 4GB, but you should be covered for anything really.

Thanks for all the great responses. I also use my PS3 more for a media hub then for gaming. Like almost exclusively. My 360 does not make it as easy, but at least I do most of my gaming on that system. I use Tversity with my PS3 for streaming, but it sounds
like the Epic will be an easier solution.

Is the PS3 also a wifi "N" device?

Oh, I've had a 360 hard drive failure and it SUCKS!!! I lost so much progress on so many games. I never even restarted most of them. It was not worth it. I did get one of those memory card things for my saved games after that. Much safer!

I don't know about the new ps3's, but my model isn't (OG 60GB version) N capable. But, it is Gigabit ethernet ready, so transfering a 700mb avi to the ps3 takes like a couple of minutes max

I have been having issues with DLNA on the Epic. I can get my PS3 to see my music files, but they will NOT stream. I can, however, copy them over to the PS3 and THEN play them.

Also, I connected the phone via DLNA to my work's wi-fi and fired up a Panasonic DMPBDT350 with DLNA. The player can see my video and sound files but will not play them at all! Pictures however, work fine. For fun, I tried the TwonkyMobile app (does the same thing as Allshare), and had the same results. Any guesses?

I can't play video I shoot with the epic on the PS3. Doesn't even see the video files. But for pictures as a slideshow player- this is very cool. Really bummed Sprint nerfed the standard video out of the headphone jack- sure it would have been SD... but being able to output whatever is on the phone with a cheap $10 cord would have been awesome, and I could send signal to ANY tv without funky software.
