I wasn't trying to install a boot.img, I downloaded CM7 from the rom manager but during the install it hung at the HTC splash screen for nearly 20 minutes before I pulled the battery and stayed that way - this is what started my whole problem

Apparently my phone is S-OFF, but I don't have root access... What can I do to fix this? Thanks again for all of your help

unistall Rom Manager if it is installed. Download it again from the Market and use it to flash the latest version of clockwork. It wouldn't hurt to uninstall and reinstall superuser as well.

If you delete the PF05IMG from the sdcard in the computer then download a rom you like from the computer then insert the card back into the phone you can try to flash the rom from recovery (the choice is "install from zip" then browse to the new rom. I would suggest bamf forever 1.0.7 because I've read that several people get stuck at the white screen with cm7. Once you get any rom working at least you know you're safe! Keep in mind I'm a noob like you! I got stuck at the white screen today trying to install the rooted version of the new ota from wiki and had to restore to a nandroid to escape.

S-Off is the important thing, the lack of root isn't too big of an issue (if you plan on installing a different ROM), but you may or may not still have CWM recovery installed (which you need to install ROMs).

Here's what I would do first. Make sure you have no file named "PG05IMG.zip" on your SD card. Boot into bootloader (hold vol down while powering on). Use the volume keys to select "recovery" and then the power button.

If you still have Clockwork Recovery, you're good to go. Just download a ROM, go back to CWR and install it. See the link in my sig about backing up apps and data too if you want.

If you don't have CWR, someone here will probably have to help you re-flash it, or you'll have to re-do the root procedure.

If you are s-off and don't have rom manager installed... go to the market and install it. When you open the app up, the very top option is "flash clockwork mod recovery" That does exactly what it says. Then download "SuperUser" and install that. You should be set at that point...

Keep in mind Clockwork and ROM Manager are two seperate programs. Clockwork is the custom recovery that allows ROM Manager to work.
