So I tried to use this guide to update to Gingerbread without wiping my phone since I was rooted on a stock rom and hadn't deleted any system files.

Everything went great until the last step. Flashed the SU file and then when it re-booted, it got stuck looping the EVO 4G splash screen for over 30 minutes. After I realized this wasn't normal, I pulled the battery and booted into HBOOT, I then booted into RECOVERY and tried to flash one of my recent nandroid backups. It starts flashing and fails with the message "ERROR WHILE FLASHING BOOT IMAGE!". I wiped all data/cache and it still doesn't work.
I'd do a stock RUU as a last step, but I don't think I'm there yet. Seems like a might need the latest version of CWM, no?
Any ideas before I DL and run a stock RUU?
Vital stats:
s-off
H-boot: 2.16.0001
CWM 2.5.0.1
