I will bet the bitrate is incompatible with the ringtone system.
The same happened when someone was trying to use one as a boot sound.

Never even thought about that.

Another option it is not the proper format. IIRC ringtones have to be .mp3/4 or .ogg. Flac and AAC are not supported by android.
