Stuff on the SD card.

I don't know what is going on with the SD card in my phone. At times the memory will go away, come back then go away again. In this time I did not install or uninstall anything from the phone. So my question is with all the stuff preloaded on the card is there anything I can take off without worry to get space back? Any help on that or why my SD card is acting strange will be much helpful.
