So I'm wanting to root my g3, and washed to know if any of you knew about the Stump root app that is apparently a 1 button root that requires no phone. It's it safe? And does it actually work?

BTW i have the AT&T model if that helps.

It works and it's as safe as any other way of rooting (which means that if you open a terminal or run adb and type the right [wrong?] commands, your phone will be turned into a box of useless parts). Just follow the instructions at Stump Root for LG Devices - XDA Forums.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm new to the whole flashing world. Would you recommend flashing cm12 or illusion now, or waiting for lg to release the official 5.0, or 5.0.1 build?

I can tell you FWIW my experience with the latest illusion ROM has been spectacular. It's fast, stable, and smooth with absolutely terrific customizations. battery life is also very impressive. I get over 6 hours SOT with moderate use and adaptive brightness on.

Cheers

Okay sounds great. One question tho.. Do i need to hit okay to this? Or would it be easier to just root it with the purple drake method?

I decided to use towelroot, which was spectacularly easy...literally a one click root option as I recall and I've had zero problems :-)

No worries. If you haven't already found it here you go....

https://towelroot.com/

Here's the rest of the steps I took...

1. Root with towelroot
2. Verify root by installing rootchecker app
3. Install custom recovery (I used TWRP). You'll also need to install busybox app at this point if TWRP is your choice.
4. Do a stock OS backup
5. Find your preferred ROM here http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3 Remember, ROMs are carrier model specific, so use the right thread
6. Follow flashing instructions for the ROM you select and enjoy!

Cheers

PS, if you decide on Illusion ROM make sure you install the latest GApps package too. If you don't you won't have any google services or apps.

So when i click on the link and click the icon in the middle to download the .apk, it continually opens new tabs and wont stop, so it never loads where i can download the .apk from. Did this happen to you? Or do you know why its doing this?

Edit: i tried using the stock browser. Got the app, but it says my device isn't supported? Should i try the Bruteforce thing that stump root popped up?

Update 2: I did the bruteforce and the root was successful! Will probably work on flashing illusion tonight!

I didn't have any of those issues you cited with towelroot, but I'm glad you got it working! SlimLP ROM also worked nicely for me, but so far my favourite is Illusion. Let me know how it goes :-)

If you have a new LG G3, it is at the 12B software update and Stump won't work. You have to use the LG flash tool to revert back to the 10B software. Towelroot does not work on the LG G3. I never had it tell me anything beside my device was not supported. If you are new to this root and ROM stuff...TAKE A FEW DAYS and READ. :)

Illusion is as far as I'm concerned the best deal going. But unless you take a breath, read, and have some idea why you have to do what you need to do, you may well wind up with a brick.

The reason Stump isn't working is likely due to 12B software. Once you get the Stump appliqued, then you need to apply TWRP via Bump. Then you need to backup, then you download a ROM and use TWRP to install it.

If you want to root and flash ROMs', the cardinal rule is ...Do not ever, ever take a OTA update. When you get the official 5.0 OTA, root methods will almost certainly be blocked.

+1 to all of this, though for some reason towelroot worked just fine for me. I also can't say enough about the folks over at XDA. There's just a wealth of knowledge over there and plenty of people willing to help if you ask nicely.

I had a couple of brief scares when I first tried to flash this phone but after some tinkering, and a few posts on a noob thread at XDA, I realized they were simple and reversible errors on my part. Really, you kind of need to dive in and start dabbling. That's part of the learning process which, yes, involves some risk. I'm not saying do it blindly mind you--following flash instructions closely and having some baseline awareness is important--but all that reading needs to be alloyed with seeing how things actually work (or don't) on your device.

Thanks for all the help to both of you, I'm new to flashing so if course i will read a lot before i do anything. If i have any questions tho I'll make sure to ask on forums via here or in xda before i go and brick and something.

Ok since it seems you got stump to work the next step is Bump. Go here [RECOVERY][BUMPED][VS985] TWRP touch recover… | Verizon LG G3 | XDA Forums. This is Bump from the Verizon LG G3 thread. I put that up since Verizon is my carrier. There are sections for phones from all carriers. Be double dog sure you get stuff for your variant, not something that looks good from another variant from yours.

Once that is done and TWRP recovery is installed, the first thing is to do a backup. learn for sure how to boot manually into recovery, simple, but comes in handy, because as posted above there will be some oops ans scary moments. A good couple of apps are Flashify which you can use to flash the bumped TWRP image, Quick Boot which will let you boot several different ways from the screen without buttons. Get Titanium backup and ROM Toolbox Pro. Be selective, be careful, and proceed with caution.

Be sure to get Super SU from Chainfire. It is included in the latest Illusion ROM,but not on all.

Information on those XDA threads go high up in numbers fast. Illusion is approaching 1,700 replies and 83,000 views.

As posted above, you gotta start someplace, good luck.

Glad to help. There's a bit of a learning curve but stick with Xda as a resource for downloads and advice and you should be just fine. Let us know how things go!

Going good so far! Got TWRP installed and made a backup, now just trying to figure out what is next :)

Download your ROM of choice from the XDA ROM threads for your model, reboot to recovery and try flashing. You can always restore the backup. Enjoy playing around.

Just make sure that if you get stuck or bootloop, have the method to flash back to stock on hand, and all your pictures and files you value either backed up to a cloud service or preferably your external SD card.

Don't hesitate to ask for help.

About to attempt flashing after i move important things to SD card. Got the rom downloaded and the GApps package downloaded.

You really only need the gapps pack if the ROM calls for it. Some ROMs include google apps already. Just FYI. ;)
