Hi All, I just got a Galaxy S9+, and yes I have disabled the Bixby button the best I can for now - the double press still activates it, and the long press still activates it. I made these changes by signing into my Samsung account, tapping on the settings icon which I can't access anymore. Does anyone know how to find that button again. I want to make a couple changes in that setting menu. This settings icon that I am referring to was on the white "Hello Bixby" screen. Thanks all.

Thanks! Now, do you know how to sign out of your Samsung account? You have to sign in to it to make the button changes, but now I want to sign out of my account. Any idea? Thanks.

You can't sign out of it. But you can remove it.
Settings, accounts and backup, accounts, select your Samsung account, three dots, remove account.

One useful thing I found for the Bixby button is holding it down when the keyboard is up, and it types what you say. Nice for texting sometimes.
Okay, it's all coming together now - thanks everyone! Now if Samsung would have gotten rid of this stupid button by now, then I'd be happy. Well, except for them ruining the custom text notification options in CONTACTS, where it should have stayed, rather than in 'messages'. It's truly frustrating to manage now. I suppose this is for a different post. Thanks again all.

You have to blame Google for the custom notifications. The Oreo update broke Sony's as well (they and Samsung had the same implementation for custom tones).
As for the Bixby button, I just remapped it. One press when screen on toggles sound mode (silent, vibrate, sound), two press opens Office Lens. When screen is off a double press turns on the flashlight.

All I want is to simply assign notifications for each contact. This includes call tones and texts tones. It took the software people and phone manufacturers years to figure out that people want this, and then Samsung or whomever took it away. I'm pretty sure the other kind of phone that starts with an 'i' has this option still. Volume level would be another cool option for calls and text. I REALLY want to be able to customize who I hear from.

Just assign a notification to the SMS thread. Google broke that feature for everybody on Oreo. Now notifications are on a per thread basis, which can be done on both stock SMS app and third party apps. You can still assign call tones using the contacts app.
I am having a hard time understanding how the Android updates can affect what stock apps should be able to control on their own. Please feel free to educate me.
What I have found is that Textra let's you assign a text tone to an existing conversation and if you delete that conversation then the properties are still there for further use, which is GREAT! You can't do this with the stock SMS messaging app from Samsung, which would have been acceptable to me. If Android screwed things up, then Samsung could have made things better by doing what Textra allows.

Oreo changed the notifications system on an OS level. Basically, Google pulled the rug from under Samsung. The apps are just built on what the OS allows them to do. For example, before Oreo, notifications can be intercepted by other apps. Now they can't. It used to be that the Contacts app intercepted the SMS notifications to be able to look up the sender. Now Contacts app can't.
If I may ask, how did you do that? And are you able to shut the flashlight with a double press as well?

Yes. Just use the BxActions app from the Play Store. It will work without a PC, but to have full features you need to have a PC to connect the phone to for full activation.
