Stupid question number two

OK, so I am now trying to sort out how to get music on my phone.

I always thought I could manually add them via USB but when I plug the Nexus 5 in nothing happens. I realised I had to change a setting in storage (MTP) so now it shows it as a device but it will not let me create a folder on there.

Do I need to download some form of manager?

Ignore me. It is now working - for some reason when I first connected it didn't show my the directory structure there.
