Assuming there is an LTE version of the Note 8.0, is it likely that I'll just be able to buy the device for an upfront full price, and then wait for LTE prices to drop? Or will I have to sign up to a 24 month contract at today's high prices?

I don't think the US carriers are subsidizing tablets anymore. So you will have to pay full price no matter what and if you want the LTE version, you will most likely have to buy it from the provider. At that point in time, I'm not 100% sure if you have to get a data plan or not. Since they aren't subsidized I would venture to say that you could get it without any data plan.

I thought the Note 8 was not going to be available as a phone, only a tablet. Don't know if the reviewers were speculating or had firm information.

The U.S. version will not likely be a phone, but it was said that there would be an LTE version so it will most likely be data only. Similar to how the Note 10.1 just launched on Verizon.

No word that there will be an LTE version correct?

I hope it comes out on Verizon so I can get a discount on one.

Plus, of those that I know that have ipad data plans, they are month to month plans. No contracts. If they go on vacation or buisness trip they just call and activate the lte for a month and cancel when they get back.
