How to put Car Home on Sense/Froyo such as HTC Evo:

- Download the APK file from the web. The Market will only list it for Driod and Nexus One. Here's a site with links to the file: Download: Google Car Home App - Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog
- Copy APK file to SD card and install the app (I used Astro to locate & run the file)
- There is no icon added to your apps to launch this. Do *not* create an activity shortcut using Launcher Pro as suggested elsewhere.
- Use the HTC "Car Panel" shortcut to launch. It will give you a choice, select "Make default" and choose Car Home. If you do this, you will truly get a car mode like the Droid or Nexus One. If you don't do it this way, you will be able to lauch the Car Home apps, but it won't be in car mode (where the Car Home becomes your default home screen) until deactivated.

How does this differ from the built in navigator app? Is this supposed to be android native (as opposed to EVO Sense) ?

We're not talking about the navigator app, rather the home screen replacement for car mode. There is a built in HTC car mode app called Car Panel which works well. However, I like the Google Car Home a lot better. HTC Car Panel does not let you change which shortcuts are offered, and the first shortcut on the list is "Footprints" which I currently don't use. Also, the HTC Car panel only has one page of shortcuts and will only display them in portrait mode.

Anyone figure out yet how to put contacts as shortcuts? I know this can be done when running on stock android, but the options is missing on the evo.

Thank you great love this on my EVO exactly what I wanted but didn't know this excited works perfect. Thanks again.

Naw, joelkamp was asking about the Google Car Home home screen, not the regular HTC Sense home screen. I too haven't been able to add contacts or speed dials to the Car Home screens with the Evo. Perhaps the reason has to do with the fact that the HTC Sense contacts program is not stock Android. Maybe this is one reason Google pulled the Car Home app from the market except for the Droid and the Nexus One. Another reason may be that some phones do not have the proper car mode launcher. Anyway, this the only detail I know that doesn't match the Droid or Nexus one version of Car Home on the Evo.

Adding Shortcuts in Car Home

I was able to download Car Home apk file to SD card and launch it. I also found, on XDA developers forum the apk file for Car Home Icon (Steering Wheel). I will try to attach it here. The only thing I can't do is add contacts. When you tap on "add shortcut" in Car Home app, 4 options should appear in a pop-up screen. I get 3 - Car Applications, Other Applications, and Directions & Navigation. There should be a 4th one (Direct Dial) for adding contacts. Does anyone know how to get this 4th option into the app. I am running version 2.2.1 of Car Home and have seen screen shots on several articles (internet) about Car Home app. It may not be able to run on the EVO. It is a nice app just the same. Carhome launcher.apk is the steering wheel icon. Hope it works.

This will only work on phones with HTC Sense versions prior to I think 2.5.6. After that HTC totally gutted the native android car mode in favor of their paid subscription only optionless crapware called Locations (com.htc.laputa). I know at least in Sense 3.6 Car Panel won't launch, Car home remains totally invisible, the little car never appears in notifications, even if you are root and remove the Locations packages.
