Sudden battery drain.

A few weeks ago I installed Android 10 on my Asus Zenfone 6. It has been working beautifully, with battery still at least 60% at bedtime.
The past few days it occasionally gets pretty hot, and the battery is at 20% at bedtime.
If I restart the phone it immediately cools down and charges up quickly and keeps the charge.
I have told it to optimize battery for all apps. I have looked for open apps. I stopped almost all apps from running in the background. When I look at battery usage nothing sticks out as using unusual battery.
Any ideas?
Thanks

How is your signal? I assume it hadn't changed but just thought I would ask. I would try running it in safe mode which disable all third party apps. If it doesn't get hot in safe mode then we know it's an app. Question is which one?

I do use it sometimes in a room where signal is weak. I'll have to pay attention to see if that is when it happens.
Where do I find safe mode setting?
Thanks.

If the signal is weak, the phone transmits at higher power (because it's going to be weak at the tower too), so that's one possibility.

Another is a dendrite in the battery. Look at the battery graph in Settings (search for battery usage since last charge). If you see a sudden drop to 0, followed by the current battery state, the battery is throwing a dendrite (a "feature" of lithium batteries), and has to be replaced.

Today it's working fine! It's dinnertime and I still have 66%, even after playing CC and looking at videos on FB!!
Weird!!!
Thanks for your input. I'll keep an eye on it. May never know what it was. I am being more careful about not using it too much in really poor signal areas. I really like this phone!!
