Suddenly: No signal at work

*18 seems to have helped this morning. I was literally getting 0 data...anytime I tried to access it, it would drop from its measely 1-2 bars to 0...just as an extra slap in the face. I did have ONE day last week where everything was running as it should. Super aggrevating because there are sites I check that my overly restrictive work firewall blocks.

I tried the *18 this morning and I get:

Your feature update could not be completed. Please stay on the line if you wish to speak with a customer service representative.

What exactly is the *18 feature so when I eventually speak a representative I know what I'm talking abut....

Unfortunately the *18 didn't do much for me. Yesterday I spent most of the day in a different part of the city about 10 miles from my office (both areas usually have 3G coverage) and noticed I was on 1X most of the time there as well. Even after a couple reboots and battery pulls, still spent 90% of the time on 1X. If this is the same exact issue, then it sounds like the 3G issues are much more widespread than just a single antenna that happens to be by everybody's office.

I have a question. I feel I should know this already, but does the phone tune down your signal when not using it? When I noticed this thread, I also noticed I was sitting at 1 bar here in the office. I just dialed 2 different numbers from my cell phone, and noticed on both calls my bars went up to 4 and stayed there till the call was over, then dropped back to 1 bar.

I had a similar problem. A simple restart fixed it.

*18 didn't end up working. In regards to the cell signal picking up. Normally you're running on 3G which doesn't have as much range as 1X. If you have weak 3G when you go to make a call it will switch to 1X and give you the better reception.

Im contemplatinf getting a refurbish, im just dreading setting the phone back iphone

Just make a backup of your apps and settings (MyBackup Pro does a great job of this). Then do a restore on the new device and everything is the way you had it on the old one. Just don't format the SD card before doing the restore or you lose your backup. ;)

Interesting note on this: a couple days ago I went into work, same issue, i left the area and returned later in the day and the data was working again.

I am on wifi's 75% of the time but a few times on 3g mine has briefly went to 1x before switching back in a minute

Also Mybackup pro is a great app for me too.

Ok, I really didn't want to create a new thread...but I'm still having the same issue for about a month now (with 2 separate phones). Now I noticed if I do a battery pull, within the first min I get full 3G service...then after that it will slowly die down to 1x. I know my phone can get full bars in 3G..but why won't it hold it? Is it a hardware problem that has happened to me with 2 separate phones? Or is my office building lined with lead so 3G nor Superman's x-ray vision can get in? Also, my battery drains REALLY fast...is this due to the constant search for signal?

Southern California, just got hit with this last week. Me and the wife both went from 3-4 to 1 or less. *18 worked to add 1 bar back...

The 3G/1X/3G issue that neither V or Moto address. Many explanations but no solutions. Location based? Device issue? Carrier based? Mystery continues, chapter 3G/1X.

Yea mine is now intermittent. Some days its full bars and 3G and some days it is 1 bar and 1X. Really aggravating.

Try updating roaming towers information by dialing *228 and #2

This doesn't do what you think it does. It does not make your phone magically see more towers.. When Verizon or any roaming partners put up a new tower, your phone AUTOMATICALLY sees it, just like GSM. When you dial *228 and press 2 to update the PRL, Preferred Roaming List, ALL this does is set a priority for what towers you can connect to in a given area.

This is all.

PS. CDMA and GSM are very similar technologies regardless if one's ESN based and one's SIM based. GSM is based off a tech called TDMA, Time Division Multiple Access. CDMA is Code Division Multiple Access. They call TDMA GSM because TDMA is basically the global standard for mobile devices.
