Suggest an HDMI adaptor.

I was able to use a DP Alt mode cable from Amazon. It was only $20. The only issue is it simply mirrors the display to the TV screen and since the screen ratio is not 16:9, you end up with black bars around the screen. It also mirrors the nav buttons to the TV.

Not sure if there are any settings that can resolve this yet.

I have a simple USB-C to HDMI cable, which I've used with a notebook computer I've got that has USB-C. It works with my S8+, though the sound is very garbled. I'm not expecting that an adapter will be any better, but I'd love to hear any stories about anything that actually works with the sound, too. On the other hand, a connection to a Bluetooth speaker ought to take care of the sound issues, though I haven't tried it yet....

Please a link.

A Chromecast is a great option too. You can cast your whole screen, or direct the Chromecast to stream directly from the Internet. High rez video directly from the phone will be slightly choppy, but wireless is immensely convenient.

Can the S8 mirror its display to a Chromecast? I don't see any option to do that. I think it can do Miracast but I've never seen Miracast work well enough for me.

Yes, the Chromecast app was merged into the Google Home app. There's a mirroring option in there.

I need direct connection without Wi-Fi.

I want to buy an adapter (not a cable) for when I just want to plug into the kitchen TV or something for work, etc. I already have a Roku and all that for doing wireless on my TV.

I'm juggling between whether to get a compact adapter. Or one that can charge the phone, like karmajack posted the link to. The problem with those are that they aren't as compact because they also have a female full size USB port.

But I just found this one. It has the power delivery on the back, so it is about the same size as the rest of the compact ones. The Amazon product page has it listed along with a dozen other models, so there's hardly any actual reviews for it. There's also one review on B&H for it.

So I might try it, haven't decided. Anyone else had luck with an adapter?

Sometimes--not always--it's wiser to buy Samsung. I certainly found that to be the case w/batteries (when they were removable).

Picked up the Samsung adapter on the hope that it would let you change the screen aspect ratio. Unfortunately it does not.

If you cast your screen to a Samsung TV, you can change the aspect ratio to 16:9 so the display is full screen on a TV.

Good note. I had the same thought when I tried it. Maybe they will fix it later.

I'm just glad they put the usb to hdmi output back in for the s8. Don't know why they removed a perfectly good capability on the 7.

if you play back movies, media players can switch to the proper resolution mode, this android feature should still be there. This was a thing on my htc 3d in android 4.0, its not an hd screen but movies over the MHL adapter would switch to a 720p mode.
