Sup everyone, Glad to be here.

Tab3 10.1 and Galaxy 3 user here... and not an advanced user at that. Not mom level or anything, but I haven't even rooted yet so I assume I'm pretty beginner level.

Couple questions

The phone I've had for quite some time and don't want to mess with too much, The Tab however (had it for a week now) I want to screw around with. Currently It's all loaded up (apps, contacts, music) with the essentials but I'm now in the middle of putting a few movies on here and I'm wondering if there's a more efficient, faster method than Kies? Also I'm running 4.2 on it and I want to know if there's a different OS to be running than this if I want the best performance from this device?

Any tips or links will be greatly appreciated even if its a suggestion for something I didn't ask about.

Thanks.

Welcome to the forums. What do you want to do to the device?

Well, atm I just want to maximise performance, processing speed and stuff, battery life can take a back seat. Not that the device is slow, I`m just finding it a little bit sluggish so I thought there might be a more optimised OS I could be using. The device is mostly for browsing, playing pods and loaded movies when I`m on the go, nothing special really.

Welcome to AC.

There are some options while stock and unrooted.

Try a 3rd party launcher like Nova or Action. These are very customizable and offer many ways to improve your usage of the device.

Look in your Settings / Apps and see what you can disable that your not using to cut down on useless things running taking up resources.

Otherwise if looking for more you need to turn to rooting a custom ROMs to get more out of the device like a custom kernel to control processor speed and other root related options and mods.

Thank you sir,

I have minimized the resources that the system uses already and killed a couple of processer munching apps but I am going to give that 3rd party launcher option a try.

Don`t want to get too deep with rooting just yet, though I will when I have the time to make the inevitable mistakes that come with the learning curve.

Thanks again

A different launcher may help.

Be advised: Overclocking the processor is risky. It can lead to burnouts which is never fun.

Welcome to Android Central! I see you've had the attention of some of our geniuses. It's great to see you here!

Beautiful, Thanks for the links. I will move forward but be wary of Overclocking. Burnouts do not sound fun indeed. I know a couple of people who are burnouts actually, they are pretty useless... but they did have fun getting there I assume :p

Welcome to the forums and good luck on your endeavors. I personally stop customizing at rooting and a custom ROM and don't get into overclocking and all that.

Sounds like sound advice. Nice to see another monkey! There's always a few keeping it real.

Generally speaking, How much free ram do I want to see running when I go to the application manager? I have it up to the 170`s now. What is the point when you can see any disenable difference in performance? Also obviously the settings app is running and using 65M, that can be added to the total ram when I am not in settings correct? so that would be 230-240M of ram? I assume this is plenty.

One thing is for certain... Anyone who does a Introduction for themselves here at AC will get a warm welcoming from our staff of Ambassadors and community members too ;)

Android actually wants the RAM to be as full s possible.
